:D Hi all, I am helping a friend to upgrade to ME. I dont have the specs for machine and he dont iether. We tried with a OEM (legit) disk to upgrade to ME but it would not finish. kept saying a damaged file. Then when trying to return to 98 SE when turned on the rig would stop with a message about a missing or damaged SYSTEM.INI file. Also down a little said something about
C:\windows\System\msmouse.vxd hit any key to continue.
After hitting key continued to boot and run normal. If this is not enough info I will try to get more from using BELARC and post it. He wants to get ME installed on the rig but dont have the driver disk for the MB.
Thanks for any help

I didn't know and OEM CD would upgrade a previous version? Is the CD clean and scratch free? Might also want to check the memory with memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com)

Hi Blair, I am likly wrong in saying OEM. This upgrade was bought off ebay.
It is an upgrade to ME. The puter has one stick of 128 MB SDIMM. Does 98SE have system restore and how to access it.
Thanks

I'm sorry to see the upgrade to ME from Windows 98, as in my opinion that is a downgrade...Win 98 is so much more stable than ME... but anyways.
When you tryed the upgrade did ME install? Did it stop in the middle? How did you get back to 98???
Windows 98 does have a repair option, if the computer boot ups to windows 98.
START | RUN
Type in
SFC
Select Repair

Hi Murf, I have used 98SE and 3 years back went to ME. So far to me it is very stable and has more things in it than 98. I wont return to 98 but on my other rig I have 2 hard drives and one has 98SE on it for keeping familiar with it.
The reason for this post is I did get the SYSTEM.ini file replaced from the 98 CD but the mouse thing was not found on it.He is using a USB mouse with scroll wheel and before the install it worked ok. Now the scroll wheel dont work.Where is the msmouse located and how to replace it. This is an old rig approx 400MGHZ. Real pokey.
Thanks for the reply

Have you installed the drivers for that mouse? If you use Windows generic driver, it may cause the wheel not to work.
You should be able to find the mouse in the Device manager. Right click the My Computer Icon and choose properties, then the device manager tab. Look for the mouse in there and click the + sign next to it and double click the mouse. Choose to update the drivers, or just remove them all together. But try updating first.
You should also be able to find the mouse in the Control Panel. There should be a Mouse Icon in there for you to change properties etc....
