View Full Version : Windows 98

I have Windows 98, and about 3 months ago, my menu animations slowed down. The menu animation is set to 'Unfold', and when they do, it's ok for a small menu, but large ones like the File menu in all Office programs, almost grind to a halt, which is very annoying.
I use Office 2000, which has the new, 'most recently used command first' functionality, and I believe it has something to do with this, because in Works stuff, which don't have these menus, they appear to work fine.
I have an 800Mhz Pentium III - there is no problem with the power of my PC. Anyway, as I said before, they used to work fine.
Interestingly enough, if I run TombRaider 4 (!!) then ALT-TAB back to windows and load Word, Excel or whatever, the menus work fine! This also occurs if I happen to be looking at certain pages on the Internet. As soon as I stop the game, or IE, the problem returns.
I have removed and reinstalled Office, but I don't want to have to reinstall Windows just yet. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

you could try reinstalling windows over what you have now and maybe that might correct it and that way you dont lose nothing. but wait and see if anyone else responds first.

Hey,
If I were you I would check the following....
Click Start / Run and type in REGEDIT
and go to the following key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Think of regedit as Windows Explorer if you've never used it before. Be careful when editting the registry to get what I say right. Incorrect editting of the registry can result in having to reinstall windows.
This is a very simple check/fix though...
Look in the right pane for a string called "MenuShowDelay". The number next to it is the amount milliseconds delay there is between scrolling menus opening like the Start Menu or Office.
So the lower the number you give it the faster your menus will be. I have mine on 1 and works great for me.
If the "MenuShowDelay" isn't there right click in the right hand pane of regedit and create a new string value with MenuShowDelay (has to be 1 word) as its name and the # of ms you want for the value.

Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately, I've tried changing the registry key you mention before in desperation, but the delay here refers to the start menu only and doesn't affect the menus in applications.
The thing is, the menus are getting worse!
They're now slow and jumpy. I installed DirectX 8.0 at the weekend in case that was the problem, but to no effect.
Reinstalling Windows over the top is an idea. I'll give it a go. (do I need to back anything up?)
Of course, I could completely reinstall Windows, it's just it would be nice to know what's happened.

Sorry.
Just to be picky with myself.
The MenuShowDelay doesn't just refer to the Start Menu. It's the delay between pointing yout mouse at a sub menu and that submenu appearing, and refers to all menus, as previously stated.
Unfortunately, like I say, my problem remains..........

Have you checked if "Findfast" is on your system, if yes go into Word-setup and disable it.

if you try to reinstall windows over top of the old about the only thing I could think of is you will have to redirect some of your shortcuts.
