Hello,
Can anyone tell me why the "Windows Update" doesn't seem to be working for me.
I have a user who has windows98SE and when I access the update window Microsoft, all it does is sit on the the message:
"Windows Update is looking for available updates ...0% complete"
I don't have this issue with any other 98 machine. I've run my virus scanner and didn't find any viruses.
Any suggestions? :(
Thanks,
Laura

That is a common problem with Win9x and WinMe.
Reboot into Safe Mode and go into the folders: c:\Windows\Temp\ and c:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\ and delete everything in both folders, empty the Recycle Bin and then reboot back into Normal Mode and try the update again.

I haven't seen any updates for Windows 98 for ages, I assumed they'd been stopped already! When is it that M$ officially stops supporting Windows 98?

Support and Updates are two different things. The update site is still there with all the available "packages" for update - you just won't get any new ones added.

Free support ended in June or July '03. Paid support ends Jan '04. I think.
You can still download all the updates and save them in case you have to reinstall Windows. But there will be no more new updates. :)
I've been having problems accessing the site also but I think the problem is on their end. Maybe too many accessing the site at one time getting downloads. :)
Just keep trying, you'll get through eventually. I finally did.

Thanks for that reply, I guess thats why I just get the list of recommended updates (or whatever they call them) thats mainly the multi-lingual stuff - oh and a driver update for my soundcard (which someone somewhere suggested I avoid).
Just had a thought, does that mean if I go to the update site I won't get any IE6 updates as well?

The I.E. version 6 SP1 upgrade is located elsewhere at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
