direct x update causing me problems

i downloaded an update for direct x from windows dowload. After this, i am having the following problems:


windows media player will not open (says internal error)

internet explorer has no url bar

run button is gone from start menu

search button is gone from start menu

windows update will not open

system restore will not open


someone please tell me how i can fix this. maybe if there is somewhere else where i can find run, and someone may know the system restore dos command. i don't know... someone please help...

scanreg for some reason is not doing anything. this is odd.
