Hi, a friend of mine has a problem on his PC. He doesn't know how (but I suspect someone has done this as a cruel joke!) but on boot up, it warns (Do not attempt to log on unless you are an authorized user.) I press OK then another screen appears and requests a network user name and password. I press cancel and all works fine but...it is so annoying...how do I get rid?

Go to start > settings > control panel > network
You should see a drop down box in the middle of the window that says Client for Microsoft Networks. Change it to Windows Logon and then click OK. You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so. When your computer reboots you will be asked to put in Windows password. To ensure that you never get prompted again leave the password text box blank and click the OK button. That should do it.

Any ideas how to get rid of the warning?

Microsoft includes a powerful tool to help limit user access—the System Policy Editor, Poledit for short. Poledit is not installed as part of any Win95/98 setups, but is included on the Windows 95 and 98 CDs. On the Win95 CD, look in the D:\Admin\Apptools\Poledit folder (where D: is the drive letter for your CD drive). On the Win98 CD, look in the D:\Tools\Reskit\Netadmin\Poledit folder.
If you don’t have access to the CD-ROMs, you can get the Win95 version from Microsoft on the Web at:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/downloads/LNP187.asp (get the file Policy.exe).
Once you have it go to start > run > and type poledit.
You are looking for something like this -->Click here! (http://www.wown.com/jthadd/gifs/usrlgin4.gif)
There is an option to have a warning popup at boot up. Uncheck the box. I'm not in front of a 98 box at the moment. I will check into this when I get home tonight @ 2300 CST. :)

Hello :)
I tried but this is what happens.
"Unable to open template file C:\WINDOWS\INF\COMMON.ADM: "
The system cannot find the file specified.
I cancel then I'm left with poledit application.
