Desk Top Icons

I have a Compaq running 400. When I click an Icon they all jump around and flicker off and on. If I am very careful and go between the space between the Icons I can clik ok. I changed the mouse, but that was not the problem. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hi Robert

How is life in sunny San Diego?

Anyway, lets cut to the chase. Other people have been having these kind of problems recently. It sounds like the Magistr32 virus.

I would first run the FREE housecall on-line virus scan which is at this link. http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Go to the Symantec link below and follow the Removal Instructions. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ven....24876@mm.html

Trend Micro also has Removal Tools for both the A & B variants of this virus. Go to the links below for their Removal Instructions http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virus...e=PE_MAGISTR.A
http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virus...e=PE_MAGISTR.B

I hope this helps you.

Post back and let us know how you get on.
Chris.

I believe ChrisW has this one pegged. DO NOT DELAY in having the anti-virus scan. The longer it stays on a system, the more damage it does. It can also flash a BIOS and give you an expensive doorstop where your computer once was.

If it turns out you aren't infected, c'mon back and we can look at other possibilities including some "gag" programs like "Crazy Icons".

Chris W. & Max: You were right on. I went to housecall and they scanned and eliminated bugs in 45 of my files. It took about 20 min and all is great. The scan was for files that have been infected, and they have the PC-illian program which I probably will acquire for real time. Many thanks.

You're welcome...ChrisW gets the credit for spotting this nasty bug first, though.

Glad you came back and told us how it went. Thought maybe the bug did you in. It's one of the worst ones out there. Couldn't hurt to notify the people you have in your address book. This virus is a mass-mailer and may have sent copies of itself to people in your book. They should scan their systems. To get to the point of moving icons....the thing was on your system for a long time.

Good luck

...Good catch ChrisW
