View Full Version : Windows won't load

Windows (98) will no longer load (not in normal mode OR safe mode). It tries - it displays the splash screen, but then the splash screen goes away and I'm at a DOS prompt. Typing in 'WIN' just gets me the following message: YOU ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING IN MS-DOS MODE. DO YOU WANT TO RETURN TO NORMAL MODE, TO RUN WINDOWS APPLICATION AGAIN? If I reply YES, the system reboots. If I reply NO, I'm stuck at the prompt. If I type in 'EXIT', the system reboots.
My husband was the one fooling around with the computer when this happened, and he can't remember what he did, or anything that will give me any clues as to what happened.
Can anyone help me?

Hi High Stakes,
I remember you had a similar problem before and Theoran
gave you the fix which you are going to need again.
Here is the fix (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=001016).
Your just going to have to get a leash for that husband of yours ;)
It's a pretty good rule to stay away from anything in Control Panel
unless you know exactly what your doing with it.
Many users feel that some wording they might not quite understand
"couldn't be that important" and they kind of test-what-happens.
It's better to avoid the testing because more times than not you
have to reinstall WindowsXX and that is pretty time consuming
when you'd rather be using the computer for other things.

At the dos prompt, type in :
WIN.com /w
or
WIN.com /wx

Thanks, Mike. However, I've already tried that and it just causes the system to reboot again.

At the "YOU ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING IN MS-DOS MODE. DO YOU WANT TO RETURN TO NORMAL MODE, TO RUN WINDOWS APPLICATION AGAIN" message , choose 'N' untill you get to the C:\> dos prompt. ( you may need to press 'N' several times).
At the C:\> dos prompt, type in:
EDIT C:\Config.sys
If the line:
DOS=SINGLE is there, type REM at the very beginning of the line, as thus:
REM DOS=SINGLE
Exit out and 'SAVE' file when prompted.
Reboot using CTRL+ALT+DEL keys.
Hope that does the trick.
