system restore disc not reading

I have been trying unsuccessfully to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Me o/s. Anytime I start the computer up with the restore disc the compaq logo comes up then just a blank black screen(cd rom and A drive light up)then nothing.If I start it without the disc it's fine.I backed up everything I wanted to save and just want a clean slate to start over with.
The computer came preloaded with Me. there are no setup files on the disc to access through explorer, i also have compaq quick restore disc set and I get the same results.the rom and dvd drives plays audio discs fine.How can I reformat and access these restore files?

i came here to post my compaq problem
i had problems with freezes so i wnated to reinstall me
i have done this fine before by the way

the restore freezes at 62%
i have tried my complete cd set and the single disk you get with the comp

both freeze at 62%
i think it must therefore be a hd problem, any ideas?

treid formatting my hd, think the hard drives packed in so it's getting replaced.

willy i think you should tab f10 at the compaq screen and enter the bios, on the second tab go into the settings fro boot order and check cdrom is first, floppy second and hd third :)
