Just formatted and installed a 20. gig slave drive( D :)
on my Compaq 5190 win98.
I want to copy all, including the OS from the old 12.gig
drive so all I have to do is change the jumpers and ribon cable
to make the 20gig master and the 12.gig slave.

I read where this should work, but after it goes through
the motions, there is nothing on D: except Command.com
and the 4 hidden files. eventhough I affirmed when asked
to overwrite them.

I tried this three times with no luck.

Open the MS-DOS prompt and type cd\ and enter
to change directories. Then type at the C:\>
xcopy c:\*.* d:\/s/e/h/k/c/l/r And press enter.
Overwrite COMMAND.COM (Yes/No/All)?
I hit A and it takes off, everything is scrolling up
the prompt and I do mean everything.
After a minute or so it stops:
16698 File(s)
C:\>
So I close the prompt and look in D:,
Nothing but command and the 4 hidden.
Is there a way to make this work.

I do have a version 6.03 of Norton Ghost that came on my
Epox mother board driver disk that has two options:
GHOST FOR READ ONLY and
GHOST FOR WRITE ONLY from thoes I can only choose:
Disk from image or Disk to image, Disk to Disk is grayed out.

Use GHOST.

Use WRITE ONLY>DISK TO IMAGE
Save the image on the Slave.
When ghosted, copy the Image to the Primary drive.

Then use READ ONLY>DISK FROM IMAGE
This will transfer the image file from the Primary to the Slave.

You will then have identical disks.

Like degsy I would prefer to use ghost.

Question... Is this a new hard drive? If so, didn't it come with a floppy disk. Most new hard drives come with a disk that will do all of this kind of stuff for you.

Hi Theoran
Its a maxtor drive but I bought it as a
Comp USA store brand. All it came with was the box.
Thanks degsy I downloaded the norton ghost .pdf manual
and will try to do it with ghost.

It took me a minute to understand exactly what I
was doing, seemed like the long way around the barn.
But Ghost worked great. I changed the jumpers and
ribbon cable, computer recognized the change in drives
and every thing is running fine.
Computer even boots faster with the new drive.

Thanks again.

:D Isn't Ghost Great! I love it. I'm also a big fan of PowerQuests DriveImage. I like the fact that there product has mouse support. ;)

Norton Ghost is the only Norton program that I would personally recommend to others.

It is an Invaluable program.
I also recommend Powerquest Partition Magic. Another excellent program.

I haven't used DriveImage or Drive Copy, but being PowerQuest programs i'm sure they are excellent programs.
