terri,
I would start all over again. If you have a printer, I would print the following three tutorials and follow them as closely as you can.
If you have any questions please ask. :)
How to Delete a Partition (fdisk) (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/deletepartition.shtml)
How to Create a Partition (fdisk) (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/partition.shtml)
How to Format a Partition (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/format.shtml)

Great! I'm glad starting over did the trick!
Is this a store bought computer or a custom built?
Are you able to open up the machine and find out who the maker of your modem is?

When looking at the card you should see a large area that has a yellow background. There should be some letters in the yellow area. Something like 3C905B or 3C905C-TX. Do you see this. You might have the wrong drivers.
ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/nic/3c90x/3c90x1.exe
ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/nic/3c90x/3c90x2.exe
Once you download the two EXE files. Move them to a folder named 3Com. Double click onthe files to extract them.
Once both files are extracted . . . . . right click on My Computer and then select Properties. Select the Device Manager tab. If you ave incorrect drivers then you should see your network card beside a yellow splat with an (!) in it. Right click on your network card and select properties. Select the Driver tab. Click the Update Driver button and then click n the Next button.
Click Next again than click the check box next to Specify a location and then click on the Browse button. Find your 3com folder and then click OK. Windows should display the name of your card, highlight it and then click next to install the drivers. Reboot once you are done.
