Pink screen and garbled icons

My screen will sometimes go into this pink mode where I'll have to restart, this happens usually when I open a DOS prompt.

Also, my buttons, such as the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons, as well as any other form of icon, have all went garbled. They are corrupted...

Does anyone know why this is? Or how to fix it?

Hi emex and welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

You are correct in that you have corrupted files within
WindowsXX. A reinstall should cure the icon problem.
You will not lose any programs or settings with a reinstall
but it will reset Internet Explorer to version 5.0 and you
will also have some outdated Windows files.

All you need to do after the reinstall is use Windows
Update (from the Start button) and go to the PRODUCT UPDATES
link there and get the critical updates and IE 5.5 SP2
