monitor/startup problem

hi,
i have a very strange problem ocurring with my monitor. every thime i turn the cpu on it turns to 16 bits with 640 resolution. i have tried reinstalling the monitor drivers and changing trhe resolution, but either something crashes or it asks me to restart [nothing changes on restart]. the funny thing is i have now lost the mouse, and it does not seem to register any changes i make because it asks me to enter a password or leave blank to not display the message again [this is what usually happens the first time you run windows i think]. this happens on every startup.
