Hiya,

I have just installed a second hard drive as a slave drive, by following the tutorial...
How to install a second hard drive as a slive drive in win 98 (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/tutorial.php/id/73)

All that went smoothly, untill I restarted the computer and I couldn't change the boot sequence back to my original hard drive with the operating system on it.

I went into BIOS to try and change the boot up sequence to the required order but haven't been able to.

When I go into the BIOS boot menu I have these options...

AWARD BIOS SETUP UTILTY

1. Removable (legacy floopy)
2. IDE Hard drive (Fujitsu MPD3043AT)
3. Atapi CD-Rom (CRD-8322B)
4. Other Boot Device (INT18 Device (networ)

When I bring up the sub-menu on each I get to options to either Disable it or leave it as it is.

From start up all I can do is go to fdisk or by pressing ESC a little menu comes up and I can boot from Floopy, CD-Rom,Fujitsu or SCSI. by selecting SCSI it boots up fine and the computer runs OK from the original hard drive with the operating system on it. In my computer...
A Drive is the floopy
C is the Operating system
D is the the slave
E is the CD-Rom

Booting that way is a pain and I'm sure it must be simple to fix somhow (just don't know how!)

Thanks for any help

Jon.

After you partitioned and formatted the slave drive, did you go back into FDISK and change the drive back to #2???

Hi Murf,

I did go back in, changed it then escaped and it didn't seem to work.
Went back in again and went a couple of steps further and the escaped out again as I didn't want to partition my primary (secondary now  hardrive), as I wasn't sure if it would have a detremental effect on the o/s.

On my old motherboard use to be able to go into boot up sequence and change it, but don't seem to be able to do it on this BIOS configuration.
Didn't want to fiddle to much without the knowledge...

Cheers

So what you have now is:

Jumpered
Primary Drive C: Master
Slave Drive D: Slave

1. Removable (legacy floopy)
2. IDE Hard drive (Fujitsu MPD3043AT)
3. Atapi CD-Rom (CRD-8322B)
4. Other Boot Device (INT18 Device (networ)

Isn't there an option to change the order?

If you highlight #1 Removabl;e (legacy floopy) you can change that to the SCSI drive?

Hi Murf,

Yep, can change the order so I'll give that a go.

When I installed the second hardrive there wern't any (visable) jumpers to switch over. The motherboard is in jumper free mode, so haven't touch any of the jumpers that are there.

Here goes then!!!!!!

Did you have a jumper on the hard drive you added. Should be jumpered as a SLAVE.

Hiya Murf,

It worked!

Changed "Other Boot Devices" to SCSI/Onboard ATA Boot and moved it to the top of the list.

No, I couldn't find a jumper on the slave drive to switch over, expected to find one, but couldn't

Thanks again for the very helpful advice and dummy proof instructions (much needed!!!)

Cheers

Jon.
