I/O CONFLICT AND MORE!! HELP!!!

when i boot up, i get "I/O conflict port 2F8" and must press F1 to continue to boot. then......if i don't have my windows98 disc in, i get: (red X) cannot find "setup.exe" (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are avail. then after i click ok i get: (ylw !) could not load or run "setup.exe" specified in the WIN.INI file. make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the WIN.INI file.

Hi Linnea, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

Where you installing anything or uninstalling anything prior to this problem?

Where you in the BIOS(CMOS, preboot screen)?

Do you have a virus checking program installed on your computer?

What kind of computer and how much RAM do you have?

Hi Linnea, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

Thank you :•)

Where you installing anything or uninstalling anything prior to this problem?

Yep, hard drive. (actually, someone else installed it)

Where you in the BIOS(CMOS, preboot screen)?

Yes.

Do you have a virus checking program installed on your computer?

Yes

What kind of computer and how much RAM do you have?

My computer is generic. I have 32MB of RAM.

By the way, the more I read, the more I keep coming back to my win.ini file. Just in case, here's the first few lines.

[windows]
load=
run=D:\setup.exe
NullPort=None

[Desktop]
Wallpaper=(None)
TileWallpaper=1
WallpaperStyle=0

[intl]
iCountry=1......

My modem is in comm port (or something like that) 2.

Any help would SURELY be appreciated!!

Linnea

Let's expand on this a bit.

So you were adding a hard drive to your computer. Does it work?

Then File/Save from Notepad. Then reboot.

Notice we took out the line run=D:\setup.exe

So you were adding a hard drive to your computer. Does it work?

Yes, it works.

I guess now might be a good time to tell you that....
1) I had made unsuccessful attempts to intall a pci for a USB port. My first attempt was prior to the intallation of the new hard drive. It was in the machine when the drive was installed. The installer got the same "I\O conflict" message.
2) In my attempt to try to get the thing to work, i screwed up something (s) and so I reformatted.

I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

Open that win.ini up in Notepad and change it to this

Done. Thanks. I can now boot without the "setup" errors.

The technical part is you have a problem on com port 2.
The I/O(input/output) address for com 2 is 2f8 and
the associated IRQ is 3.

The English version of that is with the bad install of the
PCI USB your computer is detecting two devices associated
with com 2. Your modem is probably on com 2 and the botched
USB is hooked to it even though it's not there(did you take it out?).

Hopefully you will see it in Device Manager(right-mouse
over My Computer, Device Manager(tab). If you can
see the PCI USB in Device Manager highlight it(click it once)
and click on the Remove(button).

You should be able to install the USB card but first I would
go out and buy some RAM. You don't have enough RAM
in your computer. 32Mb RAM is barely enough to run
Windows98.

You buy some RAM(RAM is cheap) and we will install your
USB card no probs Linnea.

No you didn't mess anything up. I prefer to think of it as
"your theories on upgrading the performance issues of your
digital device did not pan-out to your expectations"

Now that sounds way better doesn't it

For this answer I'm going to have to ask you what kind of computer you have.
What make?
What model?
How big is your hard drive?
Do you know what CPU(processor, eg:PentiumIII, AMD, Celeron) you have?

What do you use your computer for mainly?

Fat32 is a file system that is chosen when creating partitions
(allotted sections on a hard drive).

I think I'm going to ask you also what operating system you have
as well even though you did post in Windows98 forum.

Normally this file system question is asked about Windows2000
operating system.

So I am going to wait to hear what machine, Windows version, etc.
before expanding on this question.

Yea, so many meanings. Fixin' comps, being a ///\oo/\\\, computer
problems, Trojans, Virii, and I also know a bit about insects and
parasites. Entomology is a very amazing science.

My computer is pretty generic. I bought it at one of those 'computer expos' and the guy made it while I waited.

Under properties>computer it says: GenuineIntel
Pentium(r) II Processor
Intel MMX(TM) Technology
32.0 MB RAM

How big is your hard drive?

5400 RPM, 20GB

Do you know what CPU(processor, eg:PentiumIII, AMD, Celeron) you have?

The documentation given to me with my puter says that it is an Intel Celeron Processor

What do you use your computer for mainly?

Text documents, manage my money, play games, read the web.

Ok, you want to buy PC100 RAM. 128Mb(megabyte).
(it's often referred to as a stick of RAM).
That should run you about $20.00 - $25.00USD depending on the seller.

When you buy it you'll look at it and say "hmmm...what is this?"
but when you open up your computer (power plug is out of the wall
to take the tower case cover off) you'll see another stick that looks
just like it in a long skinny slot.

There are chips on one side of the RAM and you want to make sure
you plug your new RAM with the chips pointing the same way the
other RAM stick's chips are pointing. The slot, where the RAM goes,
has a clip on one side (sometimes both sides). The clips are simple
pull-back clips that you want to pull-back before you wiggle-push the
RAM securely into it's slot.

Don't push to hard, don't push too light. I've seen people push so hard
that you can hear the motherboard crack. It's a tight fit but keep wiggling
and pushing it in, then pulling it out, then pushing it in, then pulling it out.
Your kind of making it fit easier every time it goes in till the pull-back clips
can be pulled-up to secure the edge of the RAM (there is a little notch on
the edge of the RAM where the clip snaps into place.

It's definitely the easiest piece of hardware to install into a computer.
No fuss, no wires, no setting anything up in the computer after.

After you get the 128Mb in you'll have 128+32=160Mb RAM.

Before you take the case off of the tower don't shuffle your feet
around the carpet like your going to stick a party balloon to
your head. Static is bad for computers especially when you
touch the chips inside like your going to with the RAM. To
defeat the static give your tower a head rub. Rub the outer
case with both hands like your mussing up your boyfriends
hair (hey, that's the best way I can explain it ).

Edited for technical error

Do you have a virus checker program installed on your computer?

Get a floppy disk and go to
Start(button)
Setting...
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Startup Disk
(tab)
insert the floppy into the floppy drive,
wait for the light in the floppy drive to go out,
click on the
Create Disk...(button)
and answer all the questions from there.

Also get your Windows98 CD handy. We are going to reinstall your Windows98.

Don't fret. That's suppose to happen. That's Bill Gates telling you
I didn't forget what you had running when you said Shut Down...
here it is just in case you still wanted it
.

At least that's my interpretation of it.
