During my recent sound problems I was advised to download certain useless programmes, I hasten to add not by anyone on this site, I now need to remove them permanantly, I have tried delete, but they come back the next time I boot up.

what useless programs are you talking about and how are you trying to remove them?

As renegade600 asks would help to know.
If the program was actually installed, then you should remove through ADD/REMOVE Programs in Control Panel. If it does not show up there, find the program on your drive, probably under C:\Program Files, look in the directory and see if there is an uninstall file.
If the programs were not installed and the ICON is just sitting on your desktop, right click and delete should remove.
