Hi and welcome to Cyber Tech Help :)

Could you please list a full system specs rundown of your computer...incl. the amount of RAM you have, CPU type and speed, Make and model of your computer, make & model of your videocard, soundcard etc.

Your friends backup disk. Was that a cd backup of your drive ? His drive ? Or the actual Win98 cd ?

If it was a backup of his drive windows would have installed and configured itself on his computer differently because of the differing hardware configurations between yours and his computers.

Do you have a windows 98 cd ?

If you do click Start / Run and type SFC and hit enter. This will open the system file checker. Insert your windows 98 cd in preperation.

Then let SFC run to find any corrupt or missing Windows 98 files. If it asks you to restore any files let it restore them from your Windows 98 cd.

Also, you might want to run a thorough scandisk - Click Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Scandisk

and also defragment your drive.

One last thing...Could you please do this for us... Right click MyComputer and click Properties.

Then click on the Device Manager tab of the window that will have popped up. Do you see any yellow exclamation marks (!!!) ? If you do, please note them down and post them here so we can see what's going on.

Thanks,

MishY
