Go into Startup

Start->Settings->Taskbar & Start Menu, click on Advanced. Expand the List and click on Startup.

Go thru the list of things that are loading on Startup and remove anything you don't need to run on Startup. This will reduce the loadup time.

You might have broken links. Using Norton System Doctor, run it and find all the broken links and registry prolblems and fix them. Then run Speed Disk and defrag your hard disk. Then run System Optimization Wizard and optimize your registry.

Also, use Norton Clean Sweep. Use the quick clean up and remove the junk on your computer. Use the Internet Cache Cleaner and delete all the junk. Look for tmp files and delete them all.

Also, make sure Norton AntiVirus is not doing a full scan on bootup. Norton Image also can hold things up, so don't run Norton Image on startup.

Keep your hard disk defragged with Norton Speed Disk. defragmentation fall below 95%

Murf: Thanx for your help. After formating that drive, I cannot install OS, so I replace HD. It was my "emergency" HD, with Win 98 installed, nothing else. System resources was 97% free. Still same time for booting. I did not installed Norton System Works back, so far, but I run utilities from that Norton CD. It repairs a few things, but booting problem is still the same. Any other ideas? Thanx again.

I just finished working on my cousins computer and noticed the same thing, only he has W2k pro. However from what I have read it just takes a while because the virus program is scanning.

For W98, check out the msdos.sys file, there are different settings you can speed up the boot.

Good article HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q118/5/79.asp&NoWebContent=1) and Here (http://www.easydesksoftware.com/msdos.htm)

W2K Services controls. Right Click on My Computer then to MANAGE, then to Services. Good page Here (http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm)

Thanks Murf. Already been to that site. Learned about him a while ago on TechTv. I only had to disable a small amount of things. Trying to get him to let me upgrade him to Win XP.

Windows 98 will not boot without that file. It is built while you load.

It could be hidded.

If in fact you did find msdos.sys and opened it and it was empty. Right click on the file and go to properties, see what size it is. Does it show 0 byts??

Here is an generic one. Cut on paste this into Wordpad, then name it msdos.sys (make sure it does not end up as a text file:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxa
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxb
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxc
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxd
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxe
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxf
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxg
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxh
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxj
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxk
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl

Murf: Thanx for helping me. Yes, that file shows 0 kbs. It is empty. How can I save it with extention .sys, when worldpad don't let me? Can I just paste it to that empty file? Thanx.

Just open NOTEPAD (START | PROGRAM | ACCESSORIES, cut and paste, then change at the bottom where it says *.txt to *.*

Then name file msdos.sys and save it.
