I have an AMD Slot A Athlon on an Epox k7xa motherboard. 128mbpc100 sdram. 8gig hd. Aopen 52x cdrom. voodoo 3 2000 agp.
The problem is that when I run almost anything my comp just freezes up. every time.
I have tried everything I can think of and what tech support for my part companies can give me. Im clueless as to what the problem could be. It freezes up on starcraft, diablo, dark reign 2, homeworld, etc. Ive reinstalled them all more than once and have recently reformatted my hd. I just got the motherboard and cpu after I last reformatted.
Should I reformat and install win98 again?

I posted this in another thread, someone having a similar problem:
Athlon + Games = Heat
Have you overclocked the CPU?
Are you sure it's a 700 running at 700, and that it's really a 700 and not a slower CPU? If you got a black market CPU, they tell ya it's one speed when it's really another speed. Just checking.
Are you running more than the power supply fan and CPU fan? Add at least an additional case fan. Are you sure the CPU fan is working?
That's my 2c worth.
P.S. Something else that might do this is incorrect video drivers.

Could it possibly be the ram I am using? It is about 3or4 years old.

I don't think it's the RAM...but ya never know when it comes to computers. Is it PC100 RAM?

Hi,
Could you please do the following :
Click Start / Run and type in MSCONFIG and hit enter.
Then click on the startup tab.
Make a note of everything you see there and then post what you have here so we can see what's going on.
Thanks,
MishY

The RAM is pc100.
Startup has the following checked.
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile is checked twice. That seems odd to me.

Hey,
When you last installed windows did you remember to install the AGP drivers that came with your motherboard on the drivers cd ?
If you can play the games for some time before they crash then u may have a heating problem.
Your MSCONFIG startup folder appears to be fine. The reason I ask is often problems like this can occur because of very low system resources which come about by having a lot of programs load at startup. This is not apparant in your case :)
2 LoadPowerProfiles btw the way is completely normal. If you would like some further reading about this issue check out the following Microsoft article : MSKbQ187611 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q187/6/11.ASP)

My games freeze when the very first opening movie starts. I cant even get to the menu for any game.
Also I have the latest agp drivers available.

I just reintalled windows just to try it and also put a fan on my voodoo3. All my fans are running fine. but nonetheless all my games still freeze my comp. I have all the drivers intalled for everything and have Directx 8 intalled as well. What could possibly cause this to be happening.

By any chance is the Video card sharing an IRQ with another card?

OK, that made me think of something. Pull every card out of the motherboard but the video card. See what happens. Something may be going on with various cards not liking each other. Just a guess, but it's worth a try.

Ok it was my sound card that was messing it up. Everything is cool now ;)
