will file Qrestore fix registry problem?

Hi

I tried to install a modem program, and messed up the install. Mistahman had a similar problem in the thread "Windows 98 SE issues". I had some "missing" files and the Microsoft Network card test failed on the modem troubleshooter program (after it was properly installed). On startup, I got the following messages.

(copied from Misthman's thread)
------"Cannot find the device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.
The Windows registry or System.INI file refers to this device but the file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using it's uninstalling program
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file

Vnetsup.VxD

{Above text}

vredir.vxd

{Above text}

DFS.vxd"------

Then Windows loads and I get this error message:

----"Unable to load the dynamic link library MSNP32.DLL

The systen cannot find the file specified.

Some or all of the following feature is not available:

Microsoft Network"----

Then there were 2 solutions posted (links to Microsoft Help) that solved the problem.

Solution #1 was done, the messages remained (perhaps to disappear after doing #2). When trying to figure out the exact path to extract msnp32.dll to (solution #2), I found a folder created the day of my boo-boo (C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\Q312339) with 100 files. All the missing files were there.

There is also a file called Qrestore (dos name QRESTORE.REG) that is a "Registraton Entries" file (also in the above directory). The icon looks like a green half built block of cubes. It brings up a bolded MERGE command as first choice on the right click menu.

Will this file restore my missing files, including those I didn't know about?

If this is not an option, where exactly should I extract msnp32.dll to in my windows directories (...\system ??)

Thanks for any help, it has been already (my isp tech help, the modem people, said I would likely have to reload windows...... glad I looked elsewhere)

Are you getting exactly the same errors as "Misthman's"????????

You can always restore the registry prior to the problem.

yes, the errors were identical. Same messages.

I tried to install the registry but the earliest date listed was after the date of the modem mess.

Try running System File Checker.

START | RUN type in

SFC hit OK

Select check for altered files.

hey Murf

Ran sfc. The first file to come up was setupx.dll. When I went with the "Restore File" option, the next box shows me a "restore from" option, which listed that new folder Q312339 as the path, and "save file in" with C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM as the destination. I chose OK, but the system can't find the file in the "Q" directory. I looked with "find", it wasn't there.

Should I get them off the original Win98SE installation disc?

OR

I did a search on Qrestore, and found a few programs which use this utility in a data backup program.
also http://www.mofunzone.com/downloadsof...00036829.shtml is a site that calls it a restore-only, free version of Quick-split (zip) Not sure it's the same Qrestore. I'm still nervous to run it, but wonder if it would restore my original files...

I would put the Windows CD in and restore from there.

http://www.mofunzone.com/downloadso....6829.shtmlThat is a File Splitter program N/A for you problem.

Thanks

Hey Murf

Spent hours with tech help from my ISP/modem people yesterday. Did many things, in Control Panel/Network/Configuration we removed most items and reloaded the adapters and protocols as needed. In run:msconfig, we unchecked all options in Starup except Scan Registry and System Tray, and that seemed to stop the error messages on startup. Modem is now working, and when I recheck run:msconfig, SpeedTouchUSBDiagnostics has been added.

(The unchecked options were: Icone Symbiose, Task Monitor, LoadPowerProfile, internat.exe, EM_EXEC, StillImageMonitor, Logitech Wakeup, Office Startup, and run= . There were doubles of Icone Symbiose, SpeedTouchUSBDiagnostics, LoadPowerProfile)

I listed the above re: msconfig changes in case you see any problems there.

Ended up not needing/doing the fix suggested in the second option of the link (#1) to Microsoft Tech Help as suggested by GretaP (thanks also) or #2.

The SFC worked fine, and only that one file needed fixing.

I'm not sure if installing and uninstalling "lots of stuff" was the thing that fixed the error messages, but the basics are working. I haven't gone through every program to look for bugs, but the future will tell.

Just wanted to give you follow up and thank you for the help. Much appreciated

Rick

Thanks for letting us know.

I would leave like that. Unless you use the keyboard to wake er up, then check Logitech Wakeup. Also if you set tasks to be accomplished at certain times (puter on 24/7) then check Task Monitor.
