How do I check what version of DirectX I'm running and how do I uninstall and reinstall it?

Is there a way to back-up all of the Windows Updates to a CD so when I reformat and reinstall windows I don't have to keep downloading them all over again? (it becomes a big pain in the ass, especially with all of those updates that have to be downloaded and installed separately from the others)

Oh, and I see alot of these "HiJack This" logs. What is this used for and should I download it?

OS: Windows ME

Thanx.

You can download the updates and save them to HDD/CD by going to the Windows Update Catalog. I think the url is http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp but I'm not sure because I'm trying to access from an NT4 system and apparently the Windows Update Catalog is not available for this OS.

Oopsie--I notice in preview mode that the above link is truncated as well. If this and/or Baser-X's link (same link) don't work, here it is again: "http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default" without the quotes, of course.
[I don't know if the link with ellipses will work or not ;) ]
Go to Start>run and enter dxdiag to bring up the direct X diagnostics screen. The dx version and some tests and a lot of other info is there.
If direct X doesn't appear in the add/remove programs window, you can't remove it. I think [? ? ?] that you can install an older version over a newer one if you need to back up.
The HiJack logs are used by those knowledgeable people here (AnnMarie, GretaP, many others) to see what's lurking on your computer and help you get rid of the nasties. If you suspect you have virii, spyware, trojans, browser hijackers, or other nasties, download and run HiJack This and post it back here with descriptions of symptoms you think are incorrect.
