Hello,
Really sorry to start a new topic, especially with ALL of the incredible info in the "Sticky" topic, but I searched and did "find on page" for help with the problem I'm having and didn't find it. So, I'll describe below - to see if anybody is able to help me? We have 2 computers for the kids. New XP for Christmas and an old generic one off eBay that is nearly 3 years old - it's a Win98SE. I am trying to format/wipe the hard drive on the Win98SE unit, but i'm having problems with the bootdisk (I got it from bootdisk.com, the folks that provided a link to THIS site). I tested the boot disk on the kids XP unit and was able to see the CD drive by typing d: at the command prompt. On the Win98SE unit it actually seemed to ignore that the disk was even IN the drive - so I cut out to the command prompt (windows doesn't load on that machine anymore at all). Typed in a: and was able to see the files on the floppy by typing DIR. So, I typed in autoexec Here's the message it gave me and I am unable to see the CD drive. All I get is "invalid drive specification" when typing d: *and by the way, when I type HELP it says bad command or file name" Thanks for ANY possible help that anybody can provide... I will be TRULY grateful. Preparing to start your computer This may take a few minutes, please wait. The Windows 98 startup disk could not create a temporary drive for the diagnostic tools. This may be because this computer has less than the minimum required extended memory. Path not found - :\command.com Path not found - :\extract.exe Path not found - :\readme.txt Bad command or file name The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded ito drive . File not found To get help, type HELP and press ENTER |

The easiest way to get your boot diskette working would probably to go into the PC's BIOS setup and make sure that it is set to boot from A: first, then C:
You should see a message similar to the following when booting: Press 'xxx' to enter setup Where 'xxx' is something like <DEL> (delete key) or F1 (F1 function key), etc. |
