Hi. I can't seem to get my computer to finish running McAfee virus scan. Once I got an error message which said, "Mghtml has caused an error in Kernel 32 DLL: the second time I got a message which said, "Mghtml has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. We have been having problems lately with the system locking up during various tasks: games, shutdowns, restarts. Any ideas?

Hi markcspin - mghtml.exe is a McAfee file so I would suspect that your installation has corrupted. Try ininstalling McAfee and reinstalling it. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the suggestion. I uninstalled/reinstalled McAfee, but when I tried to run VirusScan after rebooting, I got dumped to a blue screen with a message saying there was an error at Filename VMM(01) + 0000E911 Error:OE: 0028: COOOF911. The only place I could get from there was a second blue screen citing Error OE: 018F:BFF8E64B, at which point the computer froze completely. What else can I do?

There was an issue with an old version of McAfee doing this when it encountered a virus if the user had a certain video adapters drivers installed. See Fatal Exception 0E" Error Message When Running McAfee VirusScan (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177672).

The error message is slightly different however the problem is obviously caused by McAfee whichever way you look at it. Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Yes, I think so.

OK, boot into Safe Mode and uninstall McAfee, reboot and run an online virus scan here (http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/). Rav generates a log. Please copy it and post it back in this thread.

OK, I uninstalled McAfee in safe mode, rebooted, and then tried to run the online virus scan. It said the following file was infected:
c:\cpqdrv\PATCHES\DOS1111.BAT - BAT/RBTG.gen*

Then the computer locked up while the following file was being scanned:

c:\ASRAPI\SUPRENG\USER1\PACK68\USERLEX.ULX

Now what?

I think it is most likely that the alert by RAV is a false/positive. It might be a good idea if we had a look at what is running on your PC.

Go here (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) and download the latest version of Hijack This to a new folder on your drive, unzip it and run a scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Thanks for your continuing help. Here's the log. I might mention that I reinstalled McAfee after the problem with the rav online scan, just from fear of matters getting worse if I left the hard drive unprotected.

You have a nasty hijacker onboard markcspin.

Close IE and all open windows and run Hijack This again. Check the below entries and click on Fix Checked.

Reboot your PC and see if you still have a problem with McAfee.

I ran Hijack This as you suggested. Alas, McAfee still fails to make it through an entire scan. I tried twice: it stopped in different places, but both times said Mghtml has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL.

AnnMarie

So we really are back where we started. If it were me markcspin, I would uninstall McAfee and try another AV and see if it also causes problems in kernel32.dll. AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php) is freeware.

Also post back a new Hijack This log so I can be sure that there are no other problems.
