I am on a fairly new system running Win98SE. The problem is this......

When I go to shutdown using the win start button, shutdown, and shutdown. My computer restarts instead of shutting down. Every darn time.

I have tried selecting other options on the "Shutdown windows" display box and then go back to shutdown and it does no good.

I downloaded a small patch from microsoft to fix a bug that hangs the comp when shutting down in the hopes that might help but no dice.

Obviously the problem with this bug is that the comp wants to run Scandisk everytime it starts up. What a pain in the butt.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Can you pls give us a full system specs rundown of your computer ..

Incl. Amount of RAM, CPU speed and model, Computer manufacturer and model, Video card make and model, soundcard etc ....

This will help us to diagnose the problem.

Thanks,

MishY

My system specs are as follows:

1gig AMD Thunderbird
128 MB PC133
Sound Blaster Live
Riva TNT2

Further specs:

Gigabyte GA-7ZX1 Mother board
no name floppy
BCE 4321E 8X8X32 CDRW

Windows 98SE

I assembled the comp myself and, of course, that's probably the problem.

If you need any other info let me know. :)

Hi there Bohica....here's something to try:

The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is not set in Windows 98 Second Edition, your computer may reboot instead of shutting down. To resolve this issue, change the FastReboot data value from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown

NOTE: After you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.exe.

Hope it works. Let us know how it goes.

Go back to your motherboard and very carefully check the wiring on the header for the power and restart buttons. Make sure you haven't jumped over a pin or reversed polarity.
