Sound and microphone

I'll try to be concise."IT" began when I started messing around with settings when I didn't know squat. I was trying to get the microphone to work.I had Perfectly good sound in all regards. Now dead as a doornail. Am I supposed to have a PCMCIA Socket AND a "PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA Controller"? (which has a yellow ! by it but which "A Complete guide to Hardware" said was something else and which I posted in another thread re Sound)How could he say that when everyone else says that that is Trouble! The odd thing is that under the PCIC with the yellow exclamation mark it says "no conflicts" Also said 0 re Basic Configuration for the controller.I checked for driver update which "help" said to do and it said I had the latest.I have W98 SE and Outlook Express 5. I have to go but will be back and will follow whatever you tell me to do and will cut and paste whatever,to help you help me so please don't give up on me yet. And thanks. Grace

Hello dere Grace

Somehow - You have managed to tell Windows that you have a PCMCIA based sound card - arather rae little bugger - thank heavens!

Go into Device Manager and remove all references to the PCMCIA card and your Sound card and reboot. If you have a driver disk for your sound card - keep it handy. If you haven't a disk just go with Windows' defaults.

Hi Alberta,Well, the funny thing about it is that I thought in my twisted little mind that I would get rid of the PCIA that had the Yellow! so I deleted it--to my surprise, it also deleted the PCMCIA and then I thought I had really screwed up but every thing remained the same and no trouble rebooting. Why the ! if there were no "conflicts and what is that PCIA? Now don't get me wrong because I am SO grateful when someone, out of the goodness of their heart, takes the time to help the rest of us but re your "If you have a driver disk etc." Sheesh, I don't have the foggiest! I guess I better go there and look around and maybe educate myself but I don't have any hopes that I'll accomplish anything but will see if it says something about a Default driver etc. Anyway you are all more than likely at work so wont get your further valueable input 'til later so will make a stab at it.In the meantime Thanks!
