I wonder if someone is able to help me....
My pc went haywire last night, what i think might have happened is that my son went on MS updates and began to download stuff, then abandoned it all halfway through.
Now though, when I try to go on the web, the page freezes and I get a popup window saying 'there was a problem with IE, send report/don't send', when I click for more details on how to resolve this, it says critical updates required.
However, when I call up MS updates, I click on Scan for updates and nothing happens at all! I have tried to select inividual topics from the updates catalogue but it will only let me get as far as the menus.
I have also tried to do a 'system restore', but the page that comes up with the dates on doesn't load properly and comes up with 'script errors'
Rather worryingly, when i click onto control panel, it wont load properly and comes up with Error 30, I cannot get into it at all.
I am on my work pc ATM, the only way I am able to access the internet!
Please advise, thankyou

Hi KatHeard,
If you have or can lay your hot little hands on a full Windows install disk, I suggest you do a reinstall of Windows. This is not the same as using a computer manufacturer's restore disk. You might also find Windows stashed on your HD in C:\Windows\Options\Install or somewhere similar. A reinstall like this will leave all your settings and data alone.
If you can get your computer running right, I suggest 2 things: make sure System Restore is creating restore points, and download and install all the critical updates from Windows Update. In fact, you might have to install one of them to get System Restore to work right.
If you want to download the updates and install them at your convenience, go here:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
{Sorry, I can't force the system to print the entire link. You can click on it, and it will work, or you can right-click it, copy shortcut, and paste it into notepad.}
You will need some knowledge of the updates you need.
HTH,

Hooorraaaaaaayyyyy I fixed it (all by myself!)
I had figured out that it was only crashing whenever I tried to click or type text into a page, ie i could follow most links but could not log in to anything.
I tried fiddling about with Internet Options etc, Java settings, but still nothing. Luckily, I managed to get into the miscrosoft website and I fully reinstalled IE from there.
Once this was in, it seemed to fix all my problems! The window and icons for control panel loads correctly now. I have now also downloaded all the critical updates. Not had chance to look into the System Restore yet though, hope it is fixed. I do know, however, that it does create restore points as i checked on that recently before these probs.
Phew thank goodness for that as I don't have Windows cd!
TY for your help strider!

Good news! :D
Fixing IE was easier than reinstalling Windoze.
And thanks for posting back the solution you found. Others can learn from your experience :)
