I'm way too lazy to look up the previous thread regarding your problem, so keep that in mind as you read on....

Most likely, yes you could buy a new hard drive and a full copy of XP to install. XP will even make it a bit easier for you b/c you will not have to worry about using FDisk to set up and partition your new drive. The only thing you would need to do is change your boot order so your computer boots from CD before hard drive. This is done in the BIOS. Once you have the boot order changed kill all power, open the case and remove the old drive and insert the new, it should be that simple. After that power up, insert the XP CD and boot from CD. You should go right into the XP setup where you can create your partitions and then install XP.

I guess depending on where you live, you may want to consider just buying a new computer. I just saw an advertisement for Gateway the other night for a nice desktop for $399 w/ a $100 mail-in rebate, which would drop it to $299. You'll probably spend at least $200 just to get a full version of XP and a hard drive.
