Do you want a full machine or can you build a computer?

Not for no 700-800 dollars. Maybe about 1200-1500 dollars minimum for a gaming computer that is fast and lots of space.

If you're building it, you could go with a 3.0GHz processor and 1GB of RAM without going over $1,500. If you're buying it, you first have to find the right place to get exactly the specs that you want.

The memory would be around $150 for two sticks of 512MB RAM, the motherboard, processor, and hard drive tolling in at about the same. The graphics and sound cards would cost around a hundred, and the case would be fifty with prebuilt bells and whistles. The monitor's about 200.. the rest, optical drives, etc, isn't a whole lot either.

When you say $700 - $800, does this include OS, monitor, keyboard, mouse, & speakers? If so, you'll have a tough time getting a good gaming machine b/c a good monitor will set you back around $200 to start with, and speakers, keyboard and mouse another $50 - $100, and then the OS another $100 - $200. But if you don't need all that, $700 - $800 should be sufficient to build a good machine that will handle gaming well.

Either way though, you can check out www.pricewatch.com to do some comparison shopping.

Hi Meangean. Can you tell us if your friends is going to be buying the entire system? (Computer, Monitor, keyboard, etc...) If they already have all that stuff and just need a fast computer then 700-800 should be pretty easy to do. Just need to know what all they already have.

If you want a gaming machine for $800, and you're not building it, you're probably SOL. :(

On the other hand, if you built it for him, or paid someone to build it for him, he'd be in a lot of luck.

The operating system only sets you back 100-200 bucks if you go with Windoze. If he hasn't had a computer before, that might be the only option, sadly.

3GHz is a lot. I have 2.2GHz and it runs SuSE 9 and WinXP dual boot pretty well. Unless he's looking at a game in specific that requires that much you probably don't need any higher than 2.4-2.6GHz, and 512MB of RAM.
