ME wont boot up all the way

just got ME for christmas and installed it over 98, installation went well except it found an error in the registry, finished installing and now when ME boots up, you see the login screen, after u log in, all you see is the desktop but no icons or start bar, what do i do? safe mode doesnt even work

I'd say first install WinME again. If that doesn't work... I'm not sure... Once you get to the desktop.. can you right click and get a menu???
