View Full Version : Uninstalling Windows ME!!

Can anyone tell me how I should go about uninstalling Windows ME???

I am having so many problems, irritating problems, nothing really major, but would like to revert back to Windows SE!!

I went into the help on the start button, typed in "uninstall", and it says to go into the add/remove, and uninstall from there. All I see in the add/remove is "Delete Windows Millenium uninstall information", which certainly doesn't uninstall Windows ME!!!

Any help will be muchly appreciated.

TIA.

Dave.

In add/remove programs you should have the option to "Uninstall Windows ME". That is the only way I know of doing it.

Thanks BigStu, but the only reference to Windows ME within the add/remove is the one I commented about above!!!

it depends on how you installed ME.
did you choose to backup your previous version during installation? if you did then at some point you would have prompted to save you system files, this then creates the following files
W9xundo.dat
W9xundo.ini
Winlfn.ini
which are need to uninstall ME. it then places Uninstall Windows ME and Delete Windows ME Uninstall Information (or something similar)in add/remove programs to allow an easy uninstall.
if you did a 'clean install' or opted not to save the system files from the previous version then it looks like you'll your only option is going to be reformat.

you said you're having minor problems with ME are you sure you don't want to try and work through some of these first http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thank you Kaz.

I thought I had done a clean install, I had to do a Windows ME set up on a floppy disk. But I see no sign of "uninstalling Windows ME" in the add remove programs!! I've checked thoroughly, there's nothing there!!!

As for the problems, I've tried working them out, but with no success!!! They are niggling problems, such as not being able to move my desktop shortcuts to where I want them, and when I open a folder, all the files in each folder overlap each other, so much so that I can't see properly, what all the files are!!

Hi Dave http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

re the niggles with ME...
it doesn't sound like 'conflict' issues that your experiencing (which is a great thing!)more like getting the 'preferences' to work as you want. I'm sure you've tried everything but if you want to give it another shot then let me know and between the two of us we might be able to sort out some of them...at least until you throw your hands up and reformat http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Dave

can you give a litte bit more info about the problems your having.

have you always had these problems (since installing ME) or did they appear at a later stage?

if I understand you correctly, you mentioned that your desktop shortcuts don't go where you want them too...
do you have active desktop enabled?
in Arrange Icons do you have a Auto Arrange checked? or any other options set

re your folder showing overlapping files...
does this happen with all your folders or just a few or one in particular?
what are your folder view settings?

Thank you Kaz, for all your concern and help here.

Okay , I have tried moving the desktop icons to where I'd like them to be. I've tried this with the "auto arrange" activated, I've tried it without that feature not activated, but whenever I have to re-boot the computer, the icons all line up on the left hand side of the desktop!!!

All the folders I open have overlapping files, it's not one in particular, or just the odd few. In the view window I have "large icons" checked off. I've tried changing to "small icons", "list", and "details", they look a whole lot better, but wheen I close, and open that folder, it reverts back to the "large icons", and I get the overlapping again!!!

Two other nagging problems I have are:-

I have the monitor set to shut itself down after 10 minutes of non computer use, but once again, on a re-boot this doesn't work!!

Also, if I put a CD in the CDrom drive, I can't "eject" it, without doing a re-boot!!!

As I said earlier, these aren't really major problems, just so very frustrating!!!

Dave.

Hi Dave http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
assuming you've run scandisk, defrag and done a virus scan to rule out heebee geebees lets get stuck into it and see if anyone else can jump on board with some ideas

because you'll be popping in and out of your Control Panel quite a bit http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif it won't hurt to drop a shortcut to it on your desktop

CD problem aside (for now)

do you have a user profile running?
My initial thought is that it's a user profile as these can be set so that desktop icons, general appearance, settings etc are set to automatically load when you log on. If you have a profile set then it will load the defaults you set
check Control Panel>User Profiles if you're unsure

if it's not that...next thought http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

re your desktop icons
with Active Desktop enabled..
right click any blank area on your desktop
select Active Desktop
from the side bar menu is Lock Desktop Items checked?
if it is UNcheck it, arrange your icons
or
do as above again but arrange your desktop then CHECK Lock Desktop Items

re your folders?
I forgot to ask if this was folders on your desktop?
does the same happen if you hit winkey+E and open a folder??
that aside..
Control Panel>Folder Options>General tab
what are you folder option settings?
while your in there have a look at the View tab
is Remember Each Folders View Settings checked?
you could also try Restore Defaults then Reset All Folders

re you're CD drive....
you mentioned when you put a CD in it won't eject it, does the CD play once it's in? is it with all CD's?
if you DON'T put in a CD do you have full access to the drive...ie can you eject, insert, eject, insert?
without waiting for your reply http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
try Control Panel>System>Device Manager tab
expand CD Rom
select the listing (you should only have 1)
hit the Properties button
under the General tab it will give you the status of it...check to see if has detected a problem
while your there flick to your Settings tab and make sure it looks aok there

this is terribly long, I do apologize!

will wait to hear back from you b4 I run at the fingers again http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Okay, just got home from work.

As far as running a user profile, I don't use that on this machine.
I regularly run a scan disc, defrag, and AV scans.

For the desktop icons, the "active desktop" is checked off, and I noticed the "lock desktop icons" was unchecked. So i just moved a couple of icons, then checked off the "lock desktop icons", did a re-boot, only to find the icons back in their original place, this despite the "lock desktop icons" still being checked off!!

As for the folder problem, it is any folder I open, not just those on the desktop. In the general tab under folder options, I see that....

Enable web content on my desktop....is checked off.

Open each folder in the same window. Is also checked off.

Enable web content in folders. Is also checked off.

In the View tab, "remember each folders view settings" is checked off, and I tried to "restore defaults" and "reset all folders", nothing changed with this.

The CD will play after prompting it, but no kind of CD will eject from the Rom drive, untill I do a re-boot!!!
I the system device manager, I'm shown two CD devices, one is the CD rom, E-IDE CD-ROM 50XL.
The other being, TEAC CD-W54E, this is the CD writer.

For the properties of the CD Rom, the device status says it is working properly, I also tried to upgrade it, but it told me I have the latest version.

I the settings tab, I see the Target ID is...1.
Logical Unitt Number.....0.
Firmware revision..12.

In the options, still in the settings tab, Disconnect, Sync data transfer, and DMA are all unchecked. Removable, and Int 13 unit are both greyed out.

For the current letter assignment, I'm showing F to be not highlighted. But in the "reserved drive letters, both the Start drive letter, and the End drive letter are both F.

I hope this information is enough, if not, please let me know whatever else you might nedd.

Thanks in advance.

Dave.

Hi Dave
hmmm.....
Make a coffee http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif cause here we go again...

disable active desktop
right-click the desktop
select Active Desktop
make sure there isn't a tick besdie Show Web Content. tick enabled, no tick disabled.
if Lock Desktop Items is an option then you have it enabled.
I imagine this will revert back once you've rebooted but if it's causing the problems it'll be worth not having it on

OK we've tried the obvious so here's my thoughts...

I'll start giving you the background/reason for the suggestions, makes it longer but it helps to know why you're doing what you're doing should something go wrong... and you never know what might occur to you when you're not thinking about it http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

firstly, what system do you have?
secondly, to some degree problems originate from how ME was installed eg whether you did a 'clean' or 'dirty' install. if you've done 'clean' then you'll have the full version and you'd have reformated your hard drive at the beginning...as in nothing whatsoever is left on your h/drive. Clean install 'tends' to put the the My Comp below My Docs...but not always. if you've done 'dirty' (upgraded/installed OVER the existing) then you'll have the upgrade version, when you upgrade it retains the desktop icon layout used previously. I'm assuming you've done 'clean' and have the purchased the full version. I understand that you don't have the files needed to restore back to 98 but that doesn't necessarily mean you've done a full install, what it can also mean is that when you did the upgrade you simply chose not to save the system files that I mentioned during an earlier post to you. During both installs (clean and upgrade) your prompted to make a startup/bootup disk which is what I suspect you have a copy of as when your asked to save a previous versions system files it stores them on your comp, not a floppy. Soooo...do you have the full version or the upgrade?

if you opted for clean and reformated then you would have backed up your files to a CD or hundreds of floppys http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif as formating would delete all of the files. do you remember doing this? if so, how did you go about re-installing your files? did you do en masse? or did you reload programs from the original disks then load your created files back on? a long shot but do you have any Norton programs installed or had previously installed?

(btw...sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you!!)

Thank you once again Kaz, I sure do appreciate your help here.

It is getting rather late for me to start going into the things you suggested tonight, so I'll leave that until tomorrow night, and just hope you don't mind this!!

But for now, I can tell you that the ME install wasn't a "clean" install. When we bought the computer, it had Windows 98 SE already installed, so the ME installation was over that, I did no re-format, just loaded the CD and followed what it offered. I did do the WindowsME set up, having it put on one floppy disk, so that I can restore it to the previous Windows version.

I do have Norton's AV and Utilities, the Utilities isn't the latest version I don't think, but I "update" the version I have pretty regular. I also have a freebie AV program too. But when I installed Windows ME, I uninstalled the free AV, and disabled any Nortons program.

I also had Go Back, running with Windows SE, but before installing ME, I uninstalled Go Back, as I'd heard it wasn't compatible with ME.

Other than that, I have the very latest version of Internet Explorer, 5.5 and whatever upgrades.

If you need any more information, please please let me know, and I'm sorry if I'm beginning to be a pain in the neck!!!!

Dave.

Hello again & no your not a pain in the neck http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

look like between the 2 of us we're going to be writing a book http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

we'll drop the CD problem drop for now as at this stage while we can't rule out system settings, it could be hardware related. As you have CD writer and it works properly (I assume) then it could be h/ware related.

don't forget that as you work your way thru the possible 'solutions' keep throwing one of icons to the middle of your desktop prior to doing a reboot, that way you'll notice straight away whether it's worked

Useless (but relevant) information for you...
Believe it or not Internet Explorer (IE) has quite an impact in your system and it's display settings....moreso if someone has worked their way up to the latest version 5.5 which may or maynot be the case with your system.
The background behind this being that Active Desktop (AD) was first born with IE4, when people upgraded to 5 they still had the AD feature but people who missed 4 and went straight to 5 didn't have AD. As AD is a part of IE that's how/why IE can cause problems with display settings. What makes me think that it's a AD settings related problem is that you're explaination of how the icons sit by default after a reboot is the same as when "Auto Arrange" is on. I asked about your user profile settings because when you have these you can set individual monitor settings...which is similar to what your experiencing as the monitor returns to default after you reboot. do you remember what version of IE you had when your OS was 98SE and if you had AD at the time??? do you have the 98SE CD?

onwards and upwards...
create a system restore point...call it "before adjustments" or similar..

if you suspect or want to rule out IE being the cause try doing "Repair" or "Restore to previous config..." thru Add/Remove programs.
do you have the service patch for 5.5 installed? might be worth shooting through the Windows Update(online) to see if it recommends patches etc and driver updates. BTW, have you checked your monitor driver?

I know you don't use profiles but you may want to just check Control Panel>Passwords, select User Profiles tab, and see which option has the radio button on (the circle with the 'dot' means it's the selected option)is it "All Users of this computer..." or "Users can customize..."

with all that ruled out...the next step is to start adjusting your system setup....

for safety sake check and update your registy
Start>Run, type in
scanregw
ok
then create another restore point...called "After IE changes" or similar

Not sure what your comfort level for 'tweaking' is but if you don't already have it installed go grab yourself a copy of Tweak UI 1.33
HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp) it's a free download, very simple to use and oh so handy http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

once installed...
Control Panel>TweakUI
select the IE tab
make sure that "Allow Active Desktop to be turned on/off" and "Allow changes to Active Desktop" have a check beside them.
ok
turn off Active Desktop by
right-click the desktop
select Active Desktop
from side menu make sure there isn't a tick beside Show Web Content. tick=enabled, no tick=disabled
throw an icon in the middle of your desktop,
then reboot

if all above fails http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif then we're not a dead duck yet http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

You mentioned having put your system files (in case you needed to restore the previous version)on a floppy....I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you cant put the files to restore previous version on a floppy...if that's what you did though then pull out the disk and have a look for the files..there should be 3 of them.

in the mean time...
do Control Panel>Folder Options>select the View tab
scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders
active the radio button beside "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
OK
close and come back to your desktop

do winkey+F (activates Find Files or Folders)
and put in
*.pwl
hit Search Now
write down what ones you have

clear the *.pwl and put in
Winlfn.ini
hit Search Now

let me know how you got on and what you have

Thank you very much again Kaz, for all the help you are trying to give me.

Okay, yes I do still have the Windows SE CD.
I never put any files onto a floppy disc, all I did was create a Windows ME set up floppy disc, when installing ME.
When wee first got the computer 9 months ago, I'm pretty sure it had the latest IE installed, but I've since upgraded to IE 5.5, and I think I'm pretty much up to date on all the patches.
For the users profiles, the "all usersof this computer" is checked off.

Without going into the folders problem for now, I've tried working on the dektop icons. I do have Tweak UI, the latest version, so I went into that and everything you mentioned to check off, was checked off. I ran a scanregw.
I right clicked on the desktop, and made sure that the "show web content" was disabled. Here is the dilemma for now, when I tried to move an icon on the desktop, a window popped up saying, "copy to here", "move to here", "create shortcut to here"!!! I tried doing all three, each time I tried one, the icon went back to its' original position!!! Now, I didn't do a re-boot, didn't see the point, unless the icons will only stay where I move them, after a re-boot???

Dave.

kaz101
January 25th, 2001, 06:36 AM
Hi Dave

'Drag and Drop' feature ....when you RIGHT click on a file and drag it, the side menu appears with Copy Here, Move Here etc etc by 'back to it's original position' do you mean back to the left hand side, like when Arrange Icons feature is on?
If Auto Arrange icons is on it won't let you drag/drop/cut/paste it anywhere...yes it'll move it but when you release the icon/file it'll pop straight back
when you startup do you have a check/tick beside Arrange Icons>Auto Arrange
if you take Auto Arrange off then it should hold the setting...at least until you reboot http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

BTW..I agree, if the icon isn't staying put then save yourself a reboot.

did you manage to locate the .pwl files and the Winlfn.ini?

btw again....You mentioned Norton what version do have? and is your SE a full CD??

Arghhhhh!!!!!!

I just tried your suggestion, keeping all the settings you mentioned, asnd "turning off" the "auto arrange. The icon stayed wher I moved it, but upon a re-boot it went back to it's original position on the left side of the desktop, I also noticed after the re-boot, that the "auto arrange" was activated again!!!

As for the Windows SE CD, I am pretty sure it is the full version, as the computer was brand new when we bought it.

kaz101
January 25th, 2001, 04:28 PM
Morning http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

as you've probably worked out by now...you're 'default' settings are "stuck"
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif which is why no matter what you do, after a reboot you'll always revert back. Defaults being inclusive of desktop icons and arrangement, folder icons and arrangement, power saving features eg monitor settings...

what causes you new settings to not stick is either...
1. Windows doesn't boot up properly
2. Windows doesn't shut down properly
3. User profiles are corrupt
4. Default user profile is corrupt
5. bootup entry isn't done properly
6. Password files are corrupt

any of those ring a bell?
corruption 'could' have occured after ME is installed but 'tends' to happen during an upgrade...an upgrade will also retain previous settings, or part there of...

if your running below Norton 2001 then there is strong chance that while it's not caused all your problems it would have had some effect.

do you have the windows startup logon?
if not how did you disable it?

how many .pwl files did you find???

2am here so now I'm off to bed http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

lufbra
January 25th, 2001, 05:32 PM
Thank you again Kaz.

Non of the "corrupt" features you mentioned rings any bells.

I'm not sure how the Windows log on was disabled, the computer was "built" for us, and the girl who built it, tested it for a couple of days, I guess she disabled that.

Would uninstalling the Nortons program help in any way? I'd be happy to get the latest version of that.

As for pwl files, I ran a search, just found the one......

DAVEELLI.pwl

As for winlfn.ini files, there was none to be found!!!!

Kaz, have a great night.

Dave.

kaz101
January 25th, 2001, 11:37 PM
Morning Dave

Re Norton
ME and Norton don't always play very nicely together. Some ppl experience major problems, some minor, some none. It's really up to you, if you don't think it's Norton related my suggestion would be to simply disable it from the startup menu if it's there (and the changed setting will hold thru a reboot http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif ) and leave uninstalling it till we've tried everything. If you want a list of Norton/ME compatible products check out THIS (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/DOCID/2000011107215039)

If you can stand another reboot why not try disabling a startup setting to see if it holds thru reboot.
start>run, type msconfig
hit the Startup tab
choose something that'll be very obvious to detect if it fails to start up eg something with a splash screen (zone alarm if you have it)or something that sits in your system tray immediately after reboot (Norton??)

The next logical step is to remove your daveelli.pwl file. The safest way to do this is to rename the file to daveelli.OLD so windows 'thinks' it's been deleted and will create a new one. If you use windows to store your passwords then write them all down before doing the above...it will remove them all, from your ISP connection logon password to the smallest site password so make sure you grab them all first. If you run in trouble after (with missed passwords) don't panic too much as there is program that'll read a pwl file but we'd go through that offline http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

ok...
start>find>daveelli.pwl
right click the file
select rename and change daveelli.pwl to daveelli.OLD
re boot

this bit is IMPORTANT
when it reboots you'll be prompted to logon
in the user name type user (or whatever, but not daveelli)
hit the Tab button
leave the password blank
press OK

DON'T hit cancel as it disables the saving of settings and passwords

don't panic if you see your orignal settings again (at least not yet!) as by default windows has Auto Arrange (Icons)set to ON (check/tick beside) so go thru and re arrange your desktop icons, reset a folder. At this stage I'd still keep Active Desktop disabled.

now you can cross your fingers and reboot http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

I will tell you that I have already uninstalled the Norton's Utilities I had, it was the 4.0 version, and I'm upgrading it to the 2001 version, maybe I can do that tomorrow morning, before going to work.

On another note, remember my saying that the monitor doesn't shut off, well, strange as it may be, it has suddenly decided to start working, shutting itself off, even after a re-boot!!! Isn't Microsoft wonderful!!!

Hi there Kaz, hope all is well with you.

I have to say I'm a little wary of dealing with the passwords, I'm not sure about finding them all, and I really don't feel comfortable with the idea the idea of going ahead with your suggestion to change the daveelli file to old! The thought of doing this is a bit scary for me, I'm not that "up" on computers, and I don't want to ruin anything.

Hi Dave

great news about your monitor http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

re your passwords. No pressure at all, it's up to what your comfortable with http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif by renaming you file to .OLD it allows you to change it back to .pwl if the 'fix' doesn't work. .OLD will remain a 'live' file so long as you DON'T try to open it with another program eg Notepad. Thow it on a blank floppy for a backup if you like. If you want to pull the information from your current pwl first then let me know. but as I said, no pressure http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

here's a couple of things you could try 1st..
during next bootup throw it into 'safe mode' and have poke around....if your desktop and folder layout is exactly the same as your current view then what that confirms is that your dealing 'default' values that have been set. If they aren't the same, ie your folders when open have a different layout then you're dealing with a 'settings' issue.

try setting up another 'user profile' adding completely different settings to one you currently have...take it for a test drive, make sure auto arrange icons and AD are not enabled, then reboot logging in under the profile created

next....have stiff drink http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif and open your registry (back it up 1st Start>Run, type in scanregw, hit ok) and have a look at
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
and see if you have a "NoSaveSettings" and what the values are to the right of it. close your reg, don't save if prompted.

just a note...you may have to look for daveelli instead of 'user'

Well I finally got around to trying your suggestions Kaz!!!!

In safe mode, everything looks to be the same.

I created a new username, re-booted into that password, played around with the settings, rebooted into that password again, only to find that the desktop icons went back to the original position.

I did try the registry suggestion too, did a back up first, then searched for the file you mentioned, the "No Save Settings" value is.....01 00 00 00.

I remember this one on Harries Board Dave, still no luck eh? There`s no obviously apparent way of placing these desktop icons permanently...I`ll try again.

try changing your reg setting from
01 00 00 00 (this setting doesn't allow for changes)

to
00 00 00 00

backup reg first of course http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

not a problem Dave http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
re your folders did you go back to
Control Panel>Folder Options>General tab
to check the settings?
View tab
is Remember Each Folders View Settings checked?
also try Restore Defaults then Reset All Folders

by changing the registry setting it will now allow for changes...it wouldn't have restored the defaults so what we need to work our back through the settings to change them so they stick on reboot.
What routes have you followed to change the folder view that hasn't held on reboot?

Hi Geordie http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
thank you...I hope it still stands even though I'm not a man http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Okay Kaz, I've played around in the Control panel, doing just as you mention, and everything you mention is checked of. I did a restore of all folders and a reset, then checked that the "remember each folders view settings" is checked off, it was.

After playing around a bit, I did fine that setting any folders view, I could click on the "list" feature, or "small icon" feature, and after a re-boot, they would now stay the same. But when the "large icon" is checked, the files insde still overlap, making it hard to see all of them!! To be honest Kaz, this is no real big problem, I can manage with having the folders view being "list" or "small icons", so I think I'll leave this as it is for now, and just change each folder, as I open them, knowing that they will now stay the same.

Many many thanks for all yout great help Kaz, I really have appreciated it all.

Please stay tuned, cos I'm sure I'll have many other questions to ask!!! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

one thing you might like to check is vertical and horizontal icon spacing..
right click desktop>properties, appearance tab, Item drop down menu, Icon Spacing Horizontal, then Icon Spacking Vertical. The 'default' seems to be around 43 for each but perhaps making the gap larger might help a little. Could also try the Repair>Rebuild Icon in Tweak UI

anyway...kick back and enjoy ME http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

take care
