Ok guys this is a good one. I have a Windows 2000 server with 3 pc connected to it thru a switch (1 W95 and 2 W98), so I buy a new computer with W98 and when a plugged to my LAN I can see every machine in the network but the server. I tried everything and nothing seems to work, check cable, network adapter, drivers, configuration, move cables on the switch..... Can somebody help please???

It seems to me you have an addressing issue.

Already verified your sub-network mask and IP addresses? Workgroup/domain name? Host name?

Already added user to your server?

Are you using DHCP or fixed IP setting?

It happens all the time? Do you have experienced accessing the server (and just after the new machine) from a third computer when both are active?

Hi gmbastos, thanks for the replay.

The server gives the IP automatic, but I'm not using internet my network. Its only to share software and printers. I have a print server too, and its working just fine in all computers, even in the new one.

The workgroup and host name are correct, the user is alredy added, the configuration is exactly the same of the other machines (execep for the user name, of course).

From the new one I can see all the computers, so I assume that the cable and the network adapter are working properly.

Any other Ideas???

P.S. The protocols instaled are IPX/SPX and NETBIUI

You are welcome, -gOdSmAck.

Net Beui is a rather simple protocol, if each host have its own unique name it should not present conflicts. It is intended to plain simple point-to-point networking.

I have no background with respect to IPX, but it is close to IP protocol. But just one commom protocol should be enough for networking.

By the way, do you use coaxial cable or twisted pair? Ethernet or Fast Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbps) network interface cards (NIC's)? Can you transfer some file with more than 1 MB between the computers that do communicate without any errors (this will confirm your network cable and connectors are really OK)?

Be sure both computers have at least one protocol in commom. If they have and yet do not communicate, verify if there was any update to your NIC drivers and try reinstalling the protocols: sometimes disks get corrupt sectors and drivers need to be reinstalled.

But note: if both computers have IP protocol and they do not have the same subnetwork mask (or if they have the same IP address) they are not going to communicate.
