I was going to buy a custom PC from compaq or dell, but I havent the money. I was going through walmart and they have one and I'd like to know if anyone thinks this is a good deal.. :
Compaq Presario 6020WM-B Intel Celeron 2.6GHz Processor, 40GB DMA hard drive, 256 MB DDR-SDRAM with up to 64 MB allocated to video memory, 128K secondary-level cache, High speed V.92 56K flex modem (actual speeds may vary), Integrated 10/100 Base-T.. floppy and software and the usual.
Anyone got any input?

It's a decent computer for most day to day computing needs. It won't be a great gaming machine right out of the box, but it can always be upgraded, and if you're not a gamer, that won't matter anyway. It will still handle most games pretty well, just nothing too intense. What are they asking for it? I found it on the Wally World website for $498, which is a decent price since it includes monitor, mouse and keyboard. It doesn't look like it includes speakers or has monitor speakers.

What do you need a computer for, online, games, graphic work, etc... What you do makes a difference in the type of computer you get.
As far as the Walmart computer, unless you are a Compaq hater, there is nothing wrong with their computers. The computer mentioned is good for a beginner or a novice who only needs one for general onlineusage and/or to do homework and/or light business. It will have problems with a few heavy duty 3d games and major graphic work. IMO, you should upgrade the ram to 512 once you get the computer. As far as the price - not bad.

Yeah, it was the one for $498. When I run my computer, I usually run more than one big program as a time, and I do a lot of graphics. I'm not really a gamer, but like you said, things can be updated. I had heard bad comments about compaq so I was kinda iffy on it. The next little thing I'll need is how to install another hard drive as a slave.. but that'll come up after I get the computer. Thanks!

Yea, I heard bad comments about compaq myself. But I have heard bad comments on every brand. I have a compaq laptop and never had a problem. Compaq is now owned by HP. I have an HP desktop and laptop and never had a problem. If the computer is what you want, get it, most likely you will not have a problem - but as with anything, you can always get a lemon.

It's a shame they don't sell their Linux boxes at the stores yet.

For $500 you can get the computer and for another $50 or so you can add at least another 256MB Ram. That will take care of running multiple large programs at once.
As for bad Compaq reviews/comments.... I work in the customer service industry and you have to take bad comments and whatnot with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that a lot of people who make negative comments about a product or company were unhappy about something, but more often than not, it was their own error or ignorance, not company or product error that leads to the negative comments.
I currently have a Compaq Presario for the kid and have previously owned an HP. Both are/were good computers and never give/gave me any serious problems. My brother also has an HP which is getting to be pretty old now, but it is still running with all of the original parts just as good as the day I set it up for him about 3 - 4 years ago. The only changes that have ever been made to that computer were to upgrade to XP, add more Ram and add a CD-RW since it originally came with Widows 98, DVD/CD combo and 128MB Ram.
