Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am running Windows ME, so here goes!!
I installed Paint Shop Pro version 7.01 I think it is, anyway, when I tried opening it I got a message saying this......
The MSVCIRT.dll file is linked to missing export
MSVCRT.DLL:??_U@YAPAXI@Z.
Error Starting Program.
I have no idea as to what I've done wrong, but I just tried opening my Olympus Camedia program, to try and download some photo's from my digital camera, and I get the same error warning, and of course, the prog" will not open.
Any help with resolving this, will be muchly appreciated.
TIA.
Dave.

Reinstall MSVCIRT.dll using 'system file checker'. That oughta do it!

Start>Run>type in 'msinfo32', go to 'tools' and choose System File Checker from the drop-down list.
Or for even more fun, go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Info (whew!) click on Tools and choose System File Checker http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks Zipulrich.
I tried both you suggestions, first doing the "run" thing, clicked on the okay button, the warning I mentioned about in my first post pops up, I click on the okay to that one, then there's another window showing this warning......
MSINFO32
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
So then I tried going through you "Programs" suggestion, only to get the same "first posting " warning, then another saying.....
C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicrosoftShared\MSINFO\MSINFO32.EXE
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
Would it function if I throw the computer out of the window!!! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sorry Zipulrich, I never knew there was no "SFC" with Windows ME.
So, is there any other way of trying to fix this problem?
I used to be able to run C.Net's Catch Up program, but because of this problem, I can't run that now!!!

Hi Dave http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
have a poke around in c:\windows\options\install
check out win_13.cab where you should be able to locate your msvcirt.dll
extract from there to your windows/system folder
hope this makes sense... I'm tired http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

afternoon Dave
sorry it's taken a while to get back to you but here ready for action http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
you're problem was...
MSVCIRT.dll file is linked to missing export
MSVCRT.DLL:??_U@YAPAXI@Z
which I admit to being a wee bit confused as to the replacement of msvcirt.dll (i) file
It's my understanding that you'll need to replace msvcrt.dll but I'm sure zipulrich can put me straight on this.. please do http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
simple is good so that's the path we'll take and I'll try and keep this one short ;-)
what we're going to do is replace your msvcrt.dll file (or msvcirt.dll file as zipulrich suggests..either file the same procedure is the same)as it sounds like the file has the wrong end of the stick
pull out your windows ME startup disk, inhale, exhale, inhale etc and don't panic http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
right here it is...
boot to your the startup disk
select "with cd rom support" (option 2 I think) and type in following hitting enter at after each line..
c:
cd windows (will take you to c:\>windows )
cd system (will take you to c:\>windows\system )
ren msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old
cd.. (will take you back from windows system to windows)
cd.. (will take you back from windows to c:\> )
a: (will take you to A prompt)
ext.exe (this will launch "Microsoft Extract Command Line Helper" the easy way http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif )
Now I'm straining the brain with the wording but it should be similar http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
you'll see "please enter the path to the windows cab files"
type in c:\windows\options\install
then it'll come up "please enter name of file to extract"
type in msvcrt.dll (hit enter)
then it'll say "plese enter the path to extract to"
type in c:\windows\system (hit enter)
it then comes up asking you to confirm the details
Source path c:\windows\options\install
Files to extract msvcrt.dll
Destination c:\windows\system
type in Y and hit enter if it's ok, if not hit N then go back and correct
you'll hear a bit of churning going on as it searches for the file
a prompt will then appear asking if you are sure you want to overwrite the file
type in Y and hit enter
you'll hear a tink tink thing and it'll say something about extracting the file
when it's finished it'll come back to A prompt
remove the start disk
hit ctrl+alt+del to reboot
good luck
oh and before you start do the usual backup thing just in case http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Kaz, had any more bourbon? :D
I just wanted to let you know that last night, Ironside (and a friend of his), helped get me through a F Disk and reformat of this here machine! It all started with our passing a few e-mails, then I called Irons, and he talked me through a few things, only to find that there was problems with FAT and FAT32!! Anyway, to cut a long story short, he helped me get through it all, so now I just have to start getting the computer full of all the stuff I previously had.
Thanks for all your great help Kaz, I somehow have a funny feeling you'll be seeing me post here again many times!!!
Dave.
