Good Morning,
I want to uninstall Windows 2000 and replace it with Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is I do not have the CD for the Windows 2000. A coworker suggested I try to boot with my Windows 98 boot disk but 2000 continued to load. I tried to get a DOS prompt so that I could just format my C: drive but wasn't able to do that either. Any suggestions on how I can get Windows 2000 off and Windows XP on?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Are you happy to format the drive/partition and loose all data?
If so you can boot from the XP cd and format from within the setup.

You can boot from the XP CD to format if it is a full version of XP and if you have set the boot order to boot from CD before HDD. If it is an upgrade version, just run the setup from within Windows 2000.
If it is a full version, as degsy said, you can format from within setup. This would be the best method.

Hello,
I just wanted to express my appreciation for everyone's assistance. I was successful in switching/adding my operating system. My computer is working great!
Before I started downloading WXP, I connected to the internet and downloaded boot disks for WXP; a total of 6 and a bootdisk called readntfs (I read somewhere that I may need it) . . . I went to the site bootdisk.com and just for a $3.00 donation, I was able to download the the disks I needed, just in case. I really don't know exactly what I did but I didn't use the WXP boot disks at all but when I inserted the readntfs disk in the floppy drive and WXP CD in the cd-rom, I was able to locate and run the setup.exe when I wasn't able to before. Before, the WXP CD wasn't recognized, I guess; my computer did nothing. What exactly is "readntfs"? Now, I'm able to choose which operating system to work in or which hard drive. I manage to move W2K to my second hard drive where I usually use to back up my primary hard drive.
So far it looks like I did the right thing, no problems yet. I'm learning so much on this site and again I do appreciate the fast turn-around. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to answer some of these tech questions -- give back.

DOS can only read FAT16 & FAT32 file systems.
If your drive was in NTFS file system then the DOS boot disk would not have been able to see the drive.
readntfs does what it says. It's a program that allows you to boot into DOS and read a NTFS file system.
Thanks for the update :)
