Hi http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Kernel32 dll are quite common but to get to the end result asap you've really got to be as detailed as possible... the exact wording of the error message would be great if you can get it to do it again http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
I'm wondering if you could also post back with a little more detail about what brand/model of scanner it is
1st thought...
since upgrading to ME have you updated the drivers for it yet?
sorry! you also mentioned the same thing happens when viewing pics... is it the exact same error message? do you view your pics via the scanner software or through another program?

I thought it was my scanner so bought a new one the problem still occurs, I changed from a plustek to a hewlett packard. I save my pics as a jpeg directly into my documents, using Agpha photowise. Cheers John

Hi John http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
what kind of HP scanner is it? scanjet####?
does it have Parrell or USB?
have you tried updating the drivers for it from HP's site? HP have a heap of driver updates for ME...even for new equipment
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
back again... I've had coffee http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
Hit Start > Run
type in ASD
then hit OK
post back with the information it gives you
Next...
Have you tried uninstalling the the software for it (inc your Agfa photowize) then rebooting and letting Windows pick it up?
Just and idea but how about running DrWatson until you have the problem sorted out?

Hi Kaz
The exact wording, Explorer has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems try restarting your computer, I don't think it is my scanner as I said I received the same problem using a plustek. the reason I can give you the exact wording is because it has appeared whilst replying to an email, this is the first time this has occured. ASD came up with no critcal problems etc. I use a USB port to connect my scanner. Scanjet 3400c. I have re-instaled the scanner. Excuse my ignorance but what is Dr Watson. Thank you for your Time John

Hi John http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
the fact the error isn't soley generated by the scanner (or not all!) isn't a great thing http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif
Kernel errors are very very common and once you know what software/hardware is causing it you're on the road to recovery... when you've got no idea what it is that's causing them it can be a real battle
this is where Dr Watson kicks in http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
He's a diagnostic tool (he won't fix it, but he'll set you on the right road to locating the problem) if you have him running at the time of the fault 9/10 times he'll generate a detailed description of what caused the problem and sometimes he'll even offer you a suggested fix http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
if you want to run him manually then hit Start > Run and type in drwatson.exe
If you don't mind my suggesting...
as it's a random fault you're getting I think it'd pay to put a shortcut to him in your Startup menu, at least until you can identify what's causing the problem. He's a wee file (136kb) located at c:\windows\drwatson.exe

I am now running dr watson, the dam fault will not occur, i suppose its a matter of time, thanks again for your help, will keep you informed, I do not feel computer literate enough to go looking for new drivers. Cheers john

Afternoon John http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
errors never happen when you want them to http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
updating drivers isn't hard to do at all and I'm sure you'll cope admirably when you feel up to it.
I had a poke around about your scanner...
HP have a page "HP Scanjet Scanners That Are Supported on Microsoft (R) Windows Me" which you can get to HERE (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/support_doc/bps03889.html)
if you scroll down you'll find you can grab your updates/patches/drivers for the 3400c either via download or you can order it on CD. They also have a link on the page which you can regisiter for updates... so if a new patch etc comes out for your scanner they'll send you and email to let you know... very nice of them http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi John http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
what application caused it this time?
what did you have running at the same time?
you mentioned before that it happened when replying to an email.. which do you use?
Like I said it can take a while to narrow them problem down http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi John
over the next couple of days I'm only going to b popping in and out briefly so I thought I'd leave you with the following....
the general rule of thumb is that if the error is random then you need to check drivers, o/s and hardware. If it's generated by the same program each time then usually uninstall/reinstall or updating drivers will to do the trick. Do you notice a 'driver' theme running through there http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
I don't know if you've already done this but here it goes anyway...
give your system a really good sweep out.
Backup and create a restore point
then start by removing any programs etc you no longer use or need.
speaking of...just a thought did you uninstall your previous scanner software before you installed the new one?
next...
Run scanreg by hitting Start, select Run, then type in scanreg (it checks and backs up your registry)
Regclean is also good if you have it installed
article Q147769 available
HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q147/7/69.asp) has the supporting documentation and the link to download it is on the same page if you'd like to grab yourself a copy. It also creates an undo log should anything go astray.
next...
manually run Maintenance Wizard (start > run type in tuneup)
this will delete tmp files, defrag and scan disk (it will only delete files with your approval)
you may just want to pop into your temp folders to check it did a good job and/or start > find then type in *.tmp to locate some of the others.
you should be squeaky clean by now http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
keep DrWatson running for the next few days and see what applications set him off, noting down all the applications you have running and the one that you were using at the time.
if none of the above makes a difference then would like to give some thought to updating your drivers? I know you said you weren't that confident but your system can hunt them down for you and only prompt for installing if it has found an updated one.
No pressure but have a think about it http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
all the best

Hi Kaz, I was using Outlook express. I had just finnished scanning and had saved the pics into my documents, I then opened the file containing the pics to resize them as I need them a certain size to post onto ebay auction site. I then went to check my emails and the blighter appeared. Their was a difference (I put this down to drwatson) before I could not close the error message box, this time it closed but still removed the shortcut icons along the bottom left of screen, ie The two televisions that denote you are connected to the internet etc. and I still had to restart my computer,
Had I mentioned that the computer works fine with the error message showing, it is only when you try and close it that the computer crashes.
Thanks again for you time, Nobody else has been in touch to try and help, so its much appreciated.

Evening John
the common theme seems to be scanner, pictures... then outlook express, but we need to keep in mind that this could only be because your actually sending the pics.
I believe that as you had just finished using the scanner it may still be a contributing factor and as such ruling it out at this stage maybe a bit hasty... I'm prepared to be corrected on that though http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif Did you still have the scanner and/or agfaphotowize active at the time?
In your next post could you please let me know if you tried my suggestion in my previous post and gave your system a good clean out? A good clean followed by defrag and scan disk can do the world of good and it can correct some errors.
It would also be helpful to know if you uninstalled the previous scanner software before installing the HPScanJet software.
Also, did you try the link to HP that I posted for updated drivers?
Don't worry about the fact that I'm the only one that has responded, I can assure you that we're not alone http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif Many people will be reading and following the post. What you and I have been dicussing so far (the software/hardware, cleaning the system and updating drivers) is the stand procedure for working through kernel errors. Generally people will only post if they have a different suggestion to make... as we are discussing the 'norm' there is little else for anyone to actually suggest http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
all the best
Would you mind posting how much RAM you have? Other system information would also be helpful http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Kaz
I have reinstalled every thing I can without losing valuable info. I may have stumbled across the reason I get kernel.32 Im sure you can either confirm or dismiss this. I was printing out an email when I informed I did not have enough memory. I remembered reading a magazine saying you should keep your memory in IE very low. I have Increased my memory for internet temp. files. I also deleted all the cookies stored on my computer. The Amount was staggering. I may be being premature but Ive scanned, resized in my documents, etc, and no kernel. Thanks again John. ps I have athlon K6 with 64mg,
aptiva IBM. I'll make a better choice next time/

Hi John :)
you'd be surprised just how many problems can be fixed by a good clean out and you certainly hit the nail on the head with the lack of memory... kernel32.dll is the memory manager handling all the ins and outs so when there's not enough it'll drop the beans so to speak ;)
I know Microsoft states that 64RAM is enough to run ME... but to sit comfortably you might want to look at adding more in the near future as 128 seems to be the more realistic minimum
As a point of interest you may want to run System Monitor and Resource Monitor for a little while (both can be accessed from Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) so you can see what your computer is trying to deal with. It'll be a real eye opening for you when you load your scanner, editing software and then throw on outlook outlook express... you'll have new respect for your computer ;)
You've done a great job :) so all the best for the upcoming days and weeks ahead :)
