AMD of cource, unless you want the fritz chip in your computer. Look here (http://www.againsttcpa.com/tcpa-faq-en.html) for info on the fritz chip, look at the 4.th part of the page. And also you should choose Linux, not windoze as your OS. It's free and has lot greater stability. Plus, most viruses were written to attack windoze based computers, wich makes Linux extremely safe. Also with the program WINE (Windows is not emulated) (http://www.winehq.com/) you can run windoze programs. And there are lots of great free programs (http://www.openoffice.org/) and games (http://icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php?license=free) for Linux.

Or what about Athlon 64? It's got 64 bit processing and Linux is compatible. The WinXP 64 is litterally $hitty, and is as slow as a cat trying to pull 2 kilos of crap in. It dosn't work. Linux is universally compatible. Xbox, Dreambox, PS2, servers, laptops, handhelds, and much more....F*ck Micro$oft.

check this (http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/computers/processor_upgrade/general_comments_on_processors/_review/389454/) article. Even though it is a little dated, it gives some good info about the two.

Personally if given the choice, I will stick with pentium.

What are you gonna use your computer for, if it's games, then stick to AMD, and if it it's office, then stick to Transmeta (http://www.transmeta.com/). If you're gonna use it for vidoe/music editing, than sitck to Apple Mac computers with Linux installed. But stay AWAY from both M$ and Intel or as many ppl call it, Wintel.

Hey Strikk,

Need advice on whether to get...
:D

No shortage of opinions around here, eh? As for advice, it really depends on a lot of factors. I've used both AMD and Intel, with no problems. Don't worry about P4's HyperThreading capabilities - you'll never use it.

Advice - pay more attention to the other features you want in a new PC. Either chip will run any operating system, app, program, whatever. Rather, look for things like FSB speed, installed memory/type of memory, size/speed of HDD, optical drives and speed thereof, etc. etc.

Good luck and happy hunting! :)

True, but AMD jumped on the TCPA bandwagon along with Intel. Now the only processors that are kept sacred are apples, sparc, and other things nobody's heard about. :(

Even though AMD is a part of TCPA:-( it's processors are fritz-free. Transmeta's processors (http://www.transmeta.com) are great for plain office work and laptops(battery-effecient). And macs aren't exactly "designed" for office work, more like heavy 3D, video and audio editing and mastering. Sparcs aren't much used lately, I've heard. Probably just outdated.

as they say, intel inside - idiot outside

go with amd athlon xp or if you must athlon 64

you can pick up xps really cheap with the standard cooling kit now...

As far as price goes, and if you aren't getting the newest greatest chip on the market, AMD tends to be cheaper.

But they could use TCPA eventually. AMD rocks, but since they're part of the TCPA, supporting them is like supporting Mikrosoft..

And Intel doesn't have TCPA technology yet, just as AMD processors/motherboards don't. :)

If they should start with that TCPA cr**, I think Transmeta are gonna become quite popular. At least among the free thinkers.

The bulk of citizens aren't exactly free thinkers. Most of them are still using Windoze.
