Problems with JPEG images.

I have a machine with 98SE on it, I have some floppy disks with some family pictures on them and when ever I try to view these pictures only about 5% of the picture is viewable the rest is just a solid color. I know the pictures or the disks aren't bad because I took the disks to a friends house and they open fine. I think it could be the video drivers, however I don't have this problem with any of the images windows has for backgrounds and such. I have just reinstalled windows as my hard drive crashed so the drivers I have for the video are "factor" drivers off the CD. Any info would be greatly helpful, thanks.

tell us a little about your computer, cpu, ram, harddrive size/space available.
Also tell us about your video card and what software you are trying to open the graphic file with.

CPU: Pentium 500Mhz
RAM: 88MB
HDD: 10GB, just installed 98SE and office 2000 so atleast 8GB free

The video card is onboard, unfortunitly I have little information on the motherboard as it seems to be an older one. The chipset is an SIS 5595.

I'm not using any software to open the pictures with, just double-click and they open.
I have also tried other floppys with pictures on them and the result is the same.

I have also tried copying images from the FDD to the HDD and then opening them and the result is the same.

All of the pictures I have tried are .jpg images, some are from a digital camera, and some are just pictures of cars or planes that I have save from the internet, so I don't think I need some specific software to view them.

Could it be something as simple as the floppy disk drive being dirty? If so, can it be cleaned?

Hope this helps. Thanks again for any help you may be able to offer.

what happens if you copy the graphic to the harddrive and try to open it? Also try IrfanView a free graphic viewer and see if you have the same problem. There is a chance your graphic viewer is corrupted.

As far as cleaning the drive, use can air.

I downloaded the IView and because the computer that is having problems is not connected to the Internet I put the program on a floppy and tried install it.
I got two error messages:

"The IVIEW385.EXE file is linked missing OLE32.DLL: coloitialize"

and

"C:\iview385.exe
A device attached to the system is not functioning"

and of course the program did not install. I did try running it from both the floppy and then copying it on to the hard drive a both times I got the error messages.

Also when I try opening the pictures from the FDD or if I copy them to the HDD the result is the same.

I do have another floppy drive I can install, I will try things with the second floppy drive and post results.

Could you try replacing the FDD?
Maybe ask your friend for a quick lend.

OK, so I switch the floppy drive and still no luck. I also tried to instsall the IView program, but this time I got page fault error when I opened the program. The problem seems to get more and more confusing the more I try to do anything.

Also, and this may make a world of difference, the OS is not 98SE, it is 98FE.

No, it should not make a difference. Are you having any other problems with anything on your computer? What are the sizes of the pictures? What is the percentage of your computer resources available?

I just reinstalled windows 3 days ago, to my knowledge there are no other problems with the computer.
The pictures are about 60k to 100k, some smaller, some bigger.

System resources, about 85%-90% free. This figure is taken from just after I installed, I have since only installed office 2000.
