open task manager and see if an app is eating up a lot of your cpu time.
d/l, update, immunize, scan for spy & ad ware with spybot search & destroy

Also go to Black vipers website (http://www.blackviper.com/index.html) There is a services guide for win2k and xp.Win2k has alot of services that can be disabled without effecting performance depending on your network configuration.

Check your Event Viewer under Application and also the System logs, and look for any errors. Please post any you find here along with their Event IDs

what's the history of this machine? Fresh install? Been on the internet? Spyware is what I'd look at first if it's been on the internet. With your hardware and only 64 megs of ram Win2000 should still have decent performance.

Besides cleaning off spyware & trojans, clean out your *.tmp files from c:\windows\temp, and download & run Diskeeper (http://www.executive.com) defragger. I've found AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.de) to be pretty good at getting rid of spyware.
