Hi alliedforces and welcome to Cyber Tech Help :)

This requires some registry work so if you don't feel comfortable doing any part of this pls don't do it, and ask us to help.

Take a look at the following keys in regedit

go to Start / Run / REGEDIT and hit Enter.

You will now be in regedit which if you've never used it before works in the same way Windows Explorer does. In the left hand pane you will have the folders, in the right hand pane the contents of the folders.

go to
HKEY_Classes_Root\.gif
then
HKEY_Classes_Root\.jpeg
then
HKEY_Classes_Root\.jpg

and please note everything you see in those keys down on to some paper.

It will look something like (although possibly not the same) -

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif]
"Content Type"="image/x-xbitmap"
@="ACDSee.GIF"

Then please post back what you have found.

At this stage do not modify, delete, create ANY keys.

Thanks,

MishY

Also, have you recently installed any new graphics programs ? This is just a hunch but often some graphics programs like to associate themselves with certain graphic types which may be what is happening here.

here goes

In all the regedit foldes here is what i found.

Jpeg-there is a icon with the letters ab in all folders.
.jpeg
(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/jpeg
.jpg
(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/jpg"
.gif
(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/gif"

The PSP5 is paint shop pro program.

Hi,

Ok this is what you're going to need to do....

These are your reg keys atm :

(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/jpeg
.jpg
(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/jpg"
.gif
(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/gif"

You need to change the default part of each 3 keys to

(Default) "jpegfile"
Content type "image/jpeg
.jpg
(Default) "jpegfile"
Content type "image/jpg"
.gif
(Default) "giffile"
Content type "image/gif"

This is how to do it....

Go into each registry key like before but double click on the value for Default in each three keys.

So for example when clicking on the value of Default for this

(Default) "PSP5.image"
Content type "image/jpeg
.jpg

a window should popup with PSP5.image inside it. Change it to what I suggested and then move on to the next one.

If it doesn't work then no harm done just restore from the backup I am about to tell you how to do :)

Backup :

Go into Regedit like before but highlight each of these folders :

HKEY_Classes_Root\.gif
then
HKEY_Classes_Root\.jpeg
then
HKEY_Classes_Root\.jpg

Highlight for example the .gif folder in the left hand pane and then click on the toolbar File / Export Registry File.

Pick where you want to save this file to - I suggest your desktop and then make sure selected branch is ticked.

Repeat for all 3 of those I mentioned prior to altering any registry information.

This way we have all bases covered.

Once you have editted the keys as I have suggested reboot for it to take effect and try to save images in IE again.

Good luck :)

can i throw something in here....since you can only save it as a .bmp file...can you change it to a jpeg in any other program first..like say, ms paint or photodraw?
the reason im askin is becaise of a post i put here(below), and someone told me to chg my wallpaper from a jpeg to a bmp file. so couldnt we do the opposite for this problem?

gbeato,

Thanks for the interest :)

Although this would work, the function alliedforces wants should work and has thus been changed by the install of another program.

Heres something else.I downloaded Netscape Navigator and it works fine.So i guess it must be Ie 5.5 that has the problem with windows me.

Hi :)
scuse me for sticking my nose in ;) the problem you're experiencing is 'generally' caused by 3rd party programs taking over the file association (like Paint Shop) although the 'culprit' as such is generally the default settings rather than an error.

The reg fix that Mishy suggested should have done the trick but a thought might be that there isn't a defined difference between jpeg and jpg so when you get a chance pop back to your registry and check to make sure you don't have 2 sets of jpeg

another thing you could try is going to Control Panel, opening Folder Options, hit the File Types tab and scroll down to find all the jgp, jpeg, jfif, jpe file extensions. if you highlight them individually then in the details section it will tell you what program you have associated with it... as you have jpeg working aok then try associating jpg with the same program and cross your fingers when you hit OK ;)

just a thought... there is an issue with IE5.5 and ME when you try and save a jpg from a site uses login/password in the url but this is resolved in SP1... like I said just a thought and really only brain fluff
;)

Hi gbeato70

the more noses the merrier ;) it's always great to have ideas, thoughts, comments and help thrown in as you never know what might work :)

Your file association with image preview is exactly right as that's the default setting... you can change it if and when you want to let other applications pick up and if you don't like it you can change it back... so many choices! I have some jpgs being picked up image preview and some via Irfaview.. really just depends on what I'm doing at the time but the joy of ME (in my humble opinion :D ) is that it makes so many features easily accessable it gives you free movement over what you'd like to try without having to commit yourself to it long term :)

I have tried everything here and nothing works.I downloaded netscape 4.08 and it works fine.So i guess that the problem is with Msie 5.5...Any other idears..

I'd be frustrated by this too!!!!

In Folder Options what jpeg (and variations of) file associations do you have listed for each one?

another thing... have you given you temp directory a really good thumping?
