hi. i have tried on different occasions to go on internet explorer tools and update windows but everytime it starts scanning for downloads it gets to exactly 33% and an error message appears stating the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. anyone know why this is happening and how i fix it?

Have you tried disabling your firewall and anti-virus program while trying to get the updates?
Besure and re-enable them after you try.

Give this ago...
Follow these instructions to enable the option:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, clear the Use HTTP 1.1 check box.
4. Select the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections check box.
5. Attempt to open the Windows Update site again.
6. If you are still experiencing this problem you can try selecting both the HTTP 1.1 check box and the HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections check box. This may resolve the issue.

ok i tried clearing the use http 1.1 box and had just the other one checked and it still did not work. it got to 66% and gave me the error 3 times and turned my whole screen blue except for my aol window. both were selected before i made any changes so i know that doesn't work.

Ok.Well plan "B" would be to try it in safe mode. Just out of interest, how much memory have you got..You can also do the updates manually

Have you got the newest version of IE or try repairing IE by going to add/remove programs and click on IE to remove it.........it will give you the option to repair it when you do, try to repair it and then try your updates.
