Hi ainoc. The first thing I'd try would be another hard disk that is known to work on another machine. See if the problem happens again.

It wouldn't hurt to make sure all the ribbon cables are connected correctly at both the motherboard and equipment ends. Check that the power supply cables are fully seated in the drives etc.

Some other questions that might help diagnoses;

1) When the system gets to this failure point, are all the other parts that are fed by the power supply still operational (floppy drive, fans etc etc)

2) Have you had the machine open relatively recently, before it started failing?

3) [and following on from that] Any hardware changes be done recently?

4) Any other info about things that have happened to the machine or it's immediate surroundings recently?

I'm sure with a bit more info, the good folks on CTH will get you going again. My personal bet is you've got a faulty hard disc (I'm betting the thermal cutout on the actual hard disc circuit board has just given up). But don't rely on that yet!

Good luck.

WHATEVER YOU DO, try and take sensible precautions not to get a shock and also try to ensure you don't zap any components with static from yourself.

you can try installing the old hd as a slave and transfer files. It will depend whether or not how damaged the hd is.
