On a cold boot I am getting a disk boot failure but can get past it with ctl, alt, del. The system comes up and works fine. This does not happen on restarts, only cold starts. How can I get rid of this error and acquire a normal boot process.

What is the PC environment like?

Same things happen to me on cold mornings. Seems that the BIOS is too quick for the HDDs to kick in.

Second thoughts would be to give the pc a spring clean.

Check that all drives & cards are inserted properly.
Check that cables & plug are connected securely.

Clean any dust from the system.

(always take precautions when working inside a pc).

couple of other things

Try the drive in another PC. See if it boots first time.

If it does then it may be a problem with the IDE cable. Try another cable.

If not then it may be your motherboard.
You could try a BIOS upgrade if there is one available.
