So here it is!!
Two weeks ago I had to run an Fdisk and reformat, with the help of Ironside, couldn't have done it on my own, Thanks Irons.
Anyway, the thing is, I have a cable modem, so like to keep the computer running all the time, if possible. But since the reformat, I find that if the computer is left on, say while I'm at work, when I get home, I see all the icons missing, the cursor isn't anywhere to be seen, and I have to re-boot!!!
What could the problem be?
Also, when re-booting, I have the "name, password" window show up every time, how can I stop that?
All help will as usual, be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Dave.

Hey You :)
ok the password one is easy (I hope!) if its the std login/pwrd dialog box that shows up everytime you boot then it's back to that pwl file again... remember when we did it last time???
Take note of ALL the p/words stored on your computer then rename the current .pwl file to give it a .OLD extension, then reboot. When you're prompted to logon type something like user in the field, hit Tab, leave the p/word field blank, hit ok
remember not to hit cancel or put anything in the p/word field or you'll need to do it again.
re loosing your icons and cursor...
here's a ? 4 u ... has your system frozen? if you hit the windows key will it lauch the menu off the start button??? same with hitting winkey+e does this launch explorer???
off the top of my head  you might want to check out your video card, have a poke around for new/updated drivers etc another thought would be heat???
I'll wait to hear back from you before I prattle ;)

Thank you Kaz.
I've fixed the password problem, but I guess I won't be able to try the desktop problem untill tomorrow morning, as this computer will be used for most of this evening!!
So just relax with a bourbon for now, and I'll let you know tomorrow, what I've figured out!!

Hey Kaz, get them gals to serve you a bourbon!! :D :D :D
Okay, for the past couple of days, the screen hasn't gone AWOL on me!!! I've left the computer alone (not an easy thing to do, but I survived) for several hours, and when I come back to it, all the icons are still there, and it worked perfectly (yeah right, that'd be a first)!!!
However, this morning all the icons were showing, but if I clicked on any of them, they didn't open at all!! I tried pressing the Windows button on my keyboard, but that did nothing, so I had to re-boot the computer!!
Any clues as to what might be the cause of that???
Thanks in advance.
Dave.

Hey you :)
ok.. this is going to be a twitchy one as it seems it's going to come and go when it feels like it. going back a bit did you check the driver and have you noticed it running hot (the comp not you!!) lately??
3 hours till 5pm ;)
ok.. brain starting to work (now that I've stopped counting down the next 3 hours!)
1. if you have Active Desktop on disable it,
2. are you using any power management? hibernate? standby? anything like that???
3. is this happening after you've been using it or does it do it regardless?
4. using Dr Watson isn't going to cut it as you're locking up but have a poke round in faultlog. (if you've forgetten how/where it is do start> find> type in faultlog.txt)
5. I've forgotten the next thing I was going to say...just remembered.. load resource meter for a couple of days.. I'm wondering if something is kicking in and draining your resources. As you're locking up you wont be able to open it when it happens but you'll get a good indication by the colour and number of bars that are visible
