Got an IBM think pad with no os installed.
Have now fdisked it ,formatted the partition, restarted with win98se cd inserted, and when I restart with no cd I get the win98 window momentarily which changes to a blank screen with "Microsoft Windows 98" along the top and below it C:\ and a flashing cursor! and am now lost!!!.
Have typed in A:\ which I thought would be the CDRom drive but am told "Not ready reading drive A, Abort, Retry,Fail?
Have tried it with B:\ and D:\ and am told to insert the floppy disk, but don't have a floppy drive fitted.
Any tips on how to get beyond this????
Thanks

How did you fdisk then format the partition without using a boot floppy?
Can't remember if the Win98SE CD is bootable. If not you will have to use a bootdisk or a CD with bootable files on it.

I Used a Norton Utilities cd.
My win98se cd must be bootable , else how do I now get the Win 98se window.
Have now copied all files from win98se Boot diskette to a CD with intention of booting up with it but now cd drive isn't being read!
At least I think that is what is happening!
Any tips on what to type after C:\ with flashing cursor?

Ok, so I went ahead and typed in
"cd WIN98" and got
"C:\cdwin98"
I then tried
"Setup.exe", then Install,Run, and Load!
But all revert back to
"C:\cdWin98" with flashing cursor!
Where to from here????
Any tips welcome!!!

You can't just copy the boot files to the CD. You have to Create a bootable CD via the Writing Program.
It is an option along with Audio CD, Data CD, Bootable CD etc.

Thanks Degs, I wasn't aware of this and when I check my Iomega software, it isn't immediately apparent, but I'll check it further.

Thanks to everyone, but I found a simple solution by getting a friend with a
laptop fitted with a floppy drive, to fit the HDD to his machine and to boot it up from the Boot disk!
