i somehow had a program called gator downloaded to my system, and shockwavemachine(which that one i remember doing)...i have tried to delete both of these from my hd since. however, gator, or at least some remaining files, has remained on my hd, scattered of course. how can i insure myself that traces of both these programs(or any other i may want to delete)are completely gone from my hd. i know some have uninstall attached to them, but i know for a fact that gator did not. :mad:

AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.de) will get rid of Gator spyware for you.
They've been having server problems, so don't panic if the link doesn't work just yet :)

ok.. if you haven't a clue what spyware/adware is then you'll need to have a read of [THIS] (http://www.spychecker.com/spyware.html) article to bring you up to speed... but basically spyware/adware contains a form of 'tracking' software which while you remain anonymous (as such) your movements are being watched and information about where you've been etc is being sent to the business whose software is now installed on your computer.... it's like having a really nosey neighbour ;)

in zipulrich's post there is a direct link to Lavasoft (the company which has Ad-aware... which is a program that will completely remove spy/adware progs from your comp) If you're really serious about removing gator from your system you will need to download Ad-aware from their site... at the time of writing this their site is still down... if it's still down when you read this post then let me know as I have a copy of it which I can send you. It's version 4.55 released 12 March this year.

It sounds like your a little reluctant to download any more programs?? There are certain "must have" programs which in the long run will save you a bit of grief and make life so much easier... Ad-aware is one of these programs :D

Just to second or even third this!!! The Adaware program is great, it searches for any spyware/adware files very quickly, and it can easily get rid of them for you, a very useful program to have!!

GEEZ KAZ......did it really seem i was so adamant about downloading another program!!!!!! ;)
since everyone seems this is a great program to have...i guess i will go for it! hey since this site is down..send it to me?! please.. :p
now is this program always running "in the background", or does it search upon my launching it?

It doesn't run in the background, you have to launch it to get it going, but it is very fast!!
