View Full Version : Am I on ME or 98?

I recently upgraded my computer to Windows ME (kind of anyway). There was one problem though when I upgraded my computer. I had only 24 MB ram (it's low, I know), and I needed 32 MB ram to upgrade it to ME. I asked for advice from computer whizzes, and they told me that it's OK. So I upgraded it. I didn't have really serious technical problems or anything like that. Just that now, when I want to download stuff, I don't know whether I am on ME or 98, and that's a real problem because I can't download so many things, so now I'm wondering if I can download stuff that can't be for ME but could be for 98 or the other way around.

Hi Stephanie :)
I'm unsure what meant by 'kind of' upgraded to ME... do you mean you used the upgrade CD to install the bare basics only or did you patch it together with bits and pieces?
that aside... to check your system info to verify the version you have running hit the start button, go up to run and in the type field put in msinfo32 then hit ok... this will give a screen that details what version you have running etc.
To answer your question about what you can and can't download... generally speaking ;) if it runs on 98SE then you stand a good chance of it running on ME but as with most things there will always be the exceptions to the rule and you'll find some programs just won't play nicely with ME at all. Keep your eye out for the fine print as there is a pile of programs out there that don't state you can run them on ME until you download and view the README file, and some will only have the details on their faq pages... it takes a bit of digging around but you'll get there in the end :)
If you have a particular program/s in mind and your not sure feel free to post back with the details and we can check it out further for you :)

Hi :)
system requirements as per Netscape (for V6) are as follows...
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000, Pentium 233 MHz, 64 MB of RAM
some sites offer it as being aok for ME others don't  your best bet is to check with Netscape directly... save you a heap of potential grief in the long run.
watch your ram with this.... I know you mentioned that things are going ok but just take care :)
