Got builders in and don't know if, dust, electricity beng turned off without warning or what but I now have the noisiest modem in history. Everything is working ok, up to now, but my fear is there is some damage happening or about to happen.
I would appreciate suggestions on how to check, how to mend.
Thankee kindly :D

What kind of noise?
What kind of Modem? Voice/Fax modems should only make a noise when dialing up.

explain the noise, only during dialing and handshake? Do you have alot of static on the phone? Check and make sure the phone line is attached properly, the modem is seated properly. If necessary try a different phone cord to the computer. Check and make sure all phone outlets are wired properly and phones are connected properly.

thanks for your speedy responses folks :)
its a "white noise" - like you can hear everything moving and whirring but labouring over it. Its not a handshake or anything of that ilk. It sounds like it's having to work really hard.
