Norton Internet Security

Norton Internet Security (NIS) created havoc on my computers so I uninstalled it from my newer computer and sure enough, that computer works properly again.

However, on the older computer...when I installed NIS, the Anti-Virus program never installed. I tried reinstalling and got the same result. (It is still installed on the computer.) Now every time I boot up or restart the computer, I get a big red dialog box that says, "Unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files." This same message also appears when I boot up or restart the computer AFTER NIS has bee uninstalled. How can I get rid of that message?

Also, I have heard from others that NIS wreaks havoc on some computers. (I've had numerous problems with it over the past couple of years.) I am fed up with it and I am going to stop using it. However, I do want both an internet security program (for my kids) and an anti-virus program. What do you suggest? Doesn't McCafee have a program similar to NIS or should I buy them separately...i.e., a separate internet security program and a separate anti-virus program?

Thanks as always.
