Unable to load windows

I recently removed Windows XP from a computer, which was an upgrade over Windows 98 SE.

When I turn on the computer the following errors come up:

The following file is missing or corrupted C:\Windows\Himem.sys
There is an error in your config.sys file on line 1
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\EMM 386.exe
There is an error in your config.sys file on line 2
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\ SETVER.exe
There is an error in your config.sys file on line 14
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\ Himem.sys
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\ Windows\DBLBUFF.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\ WINDOWS ifshlp. SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\ COMMAND.COM
TYPE THE NAME OF THE COMMAND INTERPRETER (E.G. C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)

C>

When I tried to load a windows 98 start up Disk, it recognizes it as a non-system disk.

Any help would be appreciated

My best guess is that during the XP installation, you converted the drive to NTFS. Win98 won't run on that, it requires the FAT32 file system (or FAT16, although few use that anymore).

Unfortunately, the only way I know of to convert back to FAT32 once the drive is formatted in NTFS is to re-format the drive and reinstall Win98 and all your software. You will lose everything on the drive if you format, of course.

So, unless you're ready to back up all your data (documents, pictures, email, address book, favorites, etc.) and reformat, you might consider reinstalling XP and using it until you are ready to reformat to go back to Win98.
