Just bought a new motherboard (MSI - K7TPro2-A). Working on windows ME can't get onboard sound to work. Have downloaded latest drivers from MSI website and loaded 4n1 chip set drivers from VIA.
No sound device is present under the audio devices tab of the sounds and multimedia applet in the control panel!!
In system tab I get a message the Windows stops responding while trying to access the device...and that it will NEVER do it again! (wow how harsh!!) :-)
Help please!! It is driving me nuts!!
Thanks,
Just Jay - Just Frustrated!!!
Have: AMD Athlon 950 mHZ, 256 Meg RAM, Win ME, - if any other specs might help...let me know!!!

Hi,
Have you checked to make sure your onboard sound is enabled in the BIOS ?
If it is go into your control panel and click on Add New Hardware and see if Windows detects it.
Did you install the motherboard yourself ?

Okay here we go....
Onboard sound is enabled in BIOS....
Windows does not detect new hardware...so tried the "have disk" ran an install...but to no avail...no change.....
Yes did install motherboard myself....and everything else is working....
Just ran a DirectX diagnostic and it informed me that my sound device was busy...and could not be accessed...
Clear as mud? Anymore help???
Thanks,
MishY

OK, we need to check which IRQ's are using what in your PC because it sounds possible that you have 2 devices sharing the same IRQ hence causing this problem.
To do this click start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information then click on + next to hardware and click on conflicts/sharing
(That should work in ME tho I am referencing from a Win98SE PC atm)

Unfortunately thought of that already and no conflicts.....I have been on many message boards, this evening, and discovered that there are numerous problems with the onboard sound....so guess I fell into the pattern.....so I am going to purchase a sound card....but fear not...I will be back here if I have any problems......
Thanks for your input and assistance!!!

If possible I would always recommend never getting any onboard hardware. ie. soundcard, videocard, and modem because whenever it comes to upgrading they are rarely ever anything other than a pain.
I think you've made the right choice ;)
Good luck
