I just purchased a wireless laptop in addition to my home desktop. I don't see any reason to have the desktop "go wireless" (but could be convinced otherwise).
Can you have a network of only two computers, one of which stays wired?
If so, is the wireless router the only other equipment I need?
Finally, I've read here about the need for both hardware and software firewalls. Is the hardware firewall readily available? Once installed after a network is set up, does it protect all computers on the network?
many thanks!

i dont know a hell lot about this but i suppose you can purchase a cross-over cable and set up a 2 computer connection using RJ45 connectors. You dont need a hub really.

All you will need is a wireless router and a nic card for the desktop and if you do not get the wireless feature on the laptop, you will need a wireless card. This way you can wire the desktop and use the laptop wireless. That is what I did. I will also suggest getting the 802.11g setup because it will be faster and the signal will go further. See this (http://www.linksys.com/edu/) for more info.
As far as the firewall, imo, you will need both hardware and software firewall, see this (http://www.solutionsreview.com/Personal_Firewall_software_or_hardware_choosing.as p) for some pros and cons between the two. The wireless router will act as the hardware firewall.
